On some days the odour reached my olfactory nerves before my legs reached the front door, it was that bad. Thankfully, my room was reasonably clean and, above all, smell-free. Had it been as bad as the ground floor, I would have left, and requested my deposit back as it really was unfit for guests.

On my first day I asked for a vacuum cleaner, "Oh, have you had a spillage in your room?" asked the member of staff. "No," I replied, "I'd like to get the dogs hairs off the hall and stairs carpet." Some effort was subsequently made to remove the hairs, but not with complete effectiveness.
