Talbontdrain Guest House is an excellent B&B, run by Hilary, friendly, welcoming, making you feel good. We walked the Glyndwr's way and arrived at Talbontdrain after a beautiful but also hot walk. Tea in the garden, a hot shower, a fire in the living room and a perfect meal made us feel in paradise. The breakfast was the best there... more

From the moment we arrived we were basking in Welsh hospitality - pot of tea in front of roaring fire - generous bed with smooth soft bedlinen - piping hot bath - views of abundant cottage garden and rolling hills beyond. Dinner was perfection. Garden freshness on a plate. Summer Mediterranean Pie, bursting with ingrediants from Hiliary's own garden and... more

Arrived on foot after wet night on mountain. Pot of tea, but no orientation or offer to help dry things, so huge minus on a major walking route. Cursory, minimal communication, cold impression. Almost complete lack of empathy. Same impression felt by my wife when she phoned to enquire if I was OK (I am 62, previous heart attack etc.)... more

Management response from

This man was definitely stressed by an extremely unpleasant walk. He hid away in his room, and I had no chance to offer to help him. He did not take up any of his concerns with me at the time, in fact he seemed to be avoiding me! I think that I provide well for walkers, and have spent many...

This is a "Thank You" to Hilary for a lovely weekend! I stayed here with my husband and son for two nights. We had the family room which has a huge, comfy double bed, a put up bed and an ensuite shower room. It was £75 per night for B&B for the three of us. On the first night Hilary... more

Since my first trip to Talbontdrain 15 years ago, this cosy guesthouse has been a distant green haven forever present in my mind. Each of my ten-odd trips has been an absolute pleasure. Surrounded by luscious green hills, the accommodation is exactly how I like it – simple, homely and wonderfully comfortable. I always make myself right at home, often... more

This just isn’t your average standard stereotyped B+B. It is very much more like going to stay with your country cousin in her comfortable well-appointed house, but not having to lend a hand doing any of the household chores. Hilary, the owner, had that rare knack of being both helpful when needed, being a fund of local walking and natural... more

We stayed only one night at the Talbontdrain but it was the best part of a short break in mid-Wales. The location is incredibly picturesque, in a lovely and incontamined valley a few miles from Machynlleth. The guest house is a small, 500-years old farm run by a very welcoming hostess who made us feel at home and served us... more
