We booked into the 'Kiama Lodge' at La Trobe at Beechworth as the last stop on a cycling tour. We arrived in the beautiful grounds in the morning to drop a car and rode the wonderful bike trail (all down hill) to Everton, about 20kms away. On our return we collected a huge bunch of keys from reception, and went to the Lodge. The advertising material on the website is misleading. The lodges (there are three) are clusters of cells for inmates of an insane asylum. It was barely renovated, the sitting room contained only a few cheap couches and a tiny TV reeked of rubbing alcohol like a doctor's surgery. Our children innately sensed this was a place with a bad history. I've stayed in some pretty strange and poorly appointed places, and often this can be fun in its own right. Not here. The suffering of the former inmates has permeated the place - so much so they offer ghost tours! We returned the keys and organised alternative accommodation, sans deposit. more
