We had a fabulous weekend in Rutherglen, enhanced by our stay at "Bank on Main" , one of the town's original banks, now beautifully converted to a luxury B & B, two large ensuite guest bedrooms with possibly the biggest, most comfortable and certainly the highest bed I have every slept in! Breakfast was provided by our hosts with a choice of dishes - an excellent dinner at Beaumont's, next door bar one, followed by a delicious tokay in front of the fire in the original banking chamber exquisitely refurbished as the dining/lounge room. Very reasonably priced at $175 a night.

Saturday was spent in the purple minibus of "Grapevine Getaways" where for $45 each we were driven to 8 wineries (including some we specifically requested), and suitably loaded up the rear of the van.

This region is chockers of terrific wineries, all really close to the town of Rutherglen specialising in fortified wines, but we also picked up some local produce such as... more
