This was a one night stop on our way from Phoenix to Big Bend National Park. There are a lot of chain motels in Van Horn but we enjoy the historic hotels especially when the owners have made an effort to preserve these landmark buildings. We were greeted at the front desk by Amy who was very personable and helpful.... More

El Capitan has been an hotel, then a bank and then an hotel again. Renovation has been performed to the "old" hotel standard and, save for the air conditioning, you are really feeling in the old times. Friendly staff, clean room, good breakfast for a fair price, don't try any other place if you have to spend a nignt in... More

This is your chance to skip the big box motels situated next to every major interstate highway in America. This is your chance to experience "what it was like," and to enjoy modern conveniences such as air conditioning, a hotel dining room with a full bar and rooms with (ok, small) televisions. Motorcycle and car clubs, senior groups, girls or... More

This was our 2nd stay at the charming historic Hotel El Capitan in Van Horn, Texas. We stayed here on a road trip to Austin, Texas last May and looked forward to returning. I particularly enjoyed the dinner at the hotel the last time—there is a new chef and the food is still good. The Spring Salmon was tasty and... More

The scenery in West Texas is beautiful and rough. Communities are few, far between and small. Thanks to tripadvisor, we stopped in Van Horn for the night and stayed at the Hotel El Capitan. What a refreshing change from the chains along I-10! This is a small, restored 1930s hotel - with a restaurant and bar. It is not fancy,... More

Very nice break from the chains. Super clean room, friendly staff. Restaurant has great food. We had the pecan crusted steak and it was very good. As far as price, things cost a little more in West Texas these days. But considering the quality of the food served, we did not think the prices were out of line at all.... More

This hotel really demonstrates the value of Trip Advisor. Without the reviews we would have probably just booked a motel on the highway and would have missed this beautifully refurbished hotel. We had also read on Trip Advisor that there was no where else where it was worth eating in Van Horn. (In fact there's not much else there at... More

If you have ever been on I-10 between El Paso and San Antonio and worried about a place to stay for the night the El Capitan is worth the stop. It is clean, quite and a great value. The staff has always been very helpful. Adding to the experience is that the property has a 'story' behind it. It also... More

Stayed here a few years ago and stopped in again on March 27. Place is unreal in its architecture and history. Rooms are a bit small but very comfortable and done up in original 1930's decor. Check in took a little time as clerk was unaware of internet special "Spring Fling" 20% off posted on their own website but after... More
