This is just a warning. We had stayed at the Highland Inn earlier for a college geology trip. And we had eaten at the restaurant even earlier for the same reason. Since we loved the little town of Monterey, we made reservations at the Highland Inn in Oct., 2007. Surprisingly, we got a room with a king bed and a... more

Our stay at the Highland Inn was a wonderful belated honeymoon. We stayed the weekend of "WinterTide" 2008 and it was almost story book. We had the Inn pretty much to ourselves for 4 days. If I didn't know better I would say that they even ordered the snow on Saturday just for us. The room was a bit cramped,... more

During our vacation to the mountains West Virginia we decided to make a slight detour and stop at the Highland Inn for a nice Saturday dinner. I ordered the Trout Amandine and my wife the broiled trout. Both entrees were delicious and were done to perfection. Our waitress was very attentive and was always there to refill our drinks. After... more

I have been very impressed with the Highland Inn over the years and have stayed there every year while in the area visiting friends. It is a true historic survivor for those who love antiques and old architecture, its like stepping back in time to a happier, kinder time. All the staff members seem to not be able to do... more

After some confusion whether or not my wife and I actually had a room for a busy weekend, (I booked almost a month in advance), we settled into our room. The place had a heavy odor of cleaning supplies and I honestly did not find the Highland Inn very hospitable. Lisa, the property manager, seemed not to care about my... more

Management response from
Highinn, Owner

It is very distressing to hear that these guests did not enjoy their stay. We are proud of the fact that negative comments are so rare that they take us a little by surprise. Our Innkeeper Lisa has such a kind heart that it is difficult to understand how she could come across as not caring of a guest concerns....

We stayed one night at the Highland Inn over the Labor Day Weekend. The Monterey, VA area is full of beautiful scenery and quiet country living. The Inn itself is historic and is very quaint, although not updated. The room (Queen size bed) was small. After the bed and dresser, there was very little space and it felt cramped. The... more

A true delight: old time country atmosphere and casual comfort, operated very smoothly by interesting and hospitable people. Relax out on the splendidly preserved wooden porches with a choice of rockers or swing gliders--there's even a porch hammock swung invitingly, waiting for warmer days. Food is excellent and very reasonably priced but be aware that the dining room is not... more

If you like good, old fashioned comfort, good Virginia food, friendly proprietors and fellow guests, you will love the Highland Inn in Monterey, Virginia. Besides all of this, you will enjoy beautiful scenery at any time of the year and an environment that harks back to the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s – a small town atmosphere that we find completely... more

We love our stay at The Highland Inn in Monterey VA! You feel like you are in the mountains in Switzerland! The Inn is nestled in the valley with beautiful mountains all around. No matter what season, spring/summer/fall/winter, the scenery is wonderful! We have been coming to Monterey since 1988 and each time is different. We stayed at Highland Inn... more

The proprietor of this inn is a former executive manager of many urban Doubletree Hotels, so he knows how to run a class establishment. My wife and I absolutely loved the romantic setting and the personal service. Nice restaurant, porch with rockers in the mountains of western Virginia........neat bar........nice breakfast area........all around, a memorable experience...........getiing there is half the fun.........a... more
