Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Part of the Rocomar complex. Our room was clean and adiquate size. Kitchinette was small, The pans were big enough to feed a family of 8. It would have benefitted from a small egg pan, a collinder, a grater, salt and pepper pots with some s&p in and filters for the coffee machine. Outdoor pools were chilly- but expected. Spa looked like it had been refurbished not too long ago and was a nice touch. Large plunge pool which was not used much. Lots of steps on the complex. Be prepared. Loads of sheltered sun bathing areas on the terraces. Terraces by Oliviera Apts in desperate need of refurbishment. Main reception in the Royal Orchid and walkways were bare of pictures and very clinical.

These apartments are more like 2 star accommodation, don’t be fooled be their pics. The rooms are dirty, dated, damp and damaged. The kitchenette is ancient and the bathroom was dirty and had seen better days. The pillows were rancid and the rooms door looked like it had been broken into at some point. To top this off there was drilling in the room above.

We very much enjoyed our stay here. It’s part of a resort of three hotels that share the same facilities. We had two rooms both with a lovely sea view and balcony. The small kitchenette was basic and a tiny bit limited but ok for basic cooking. Only one room had a coffee machine. We only ate once in the main self-service restaurant which was enjoyable but slightly overpriced. We loved happy hour at the bar and also enjoyed the evening entertainment. All the staff were very helpful though the waiting time at reception could be long as there was generally only one person on the desk. We hired a car were able to park for free on the street outside the hotel and the hotel has a car park (€7.50/day). There are a few shops within walking distance. There are quite a few steps around the hotels though I think most areas are accessible by ramp or lift, but possibly not the pools. Thanks for a wonderful holiday.

Lovely location, very helpful staff, massive room for two people, which was a pleasant surprise as my daughter and I could spread out, she took the bedroom with two single beds and I took the sofa bed as I'm an early riser, we had two bathrooms. lovely kitchenette with all that we needed. The breakfast was fantastic and lots of choices of hot and cold food. We had dinner in the al cart restaurant which was very tasty. The hotel staff left a bottle of bubbles for my daughter's birthday, which was a very nice touch. They have a Gym, spa, indoor and outdoor pool, and lovely places to sunbathe on the side of the cliffs, with great sunrise views. Few shops and restaurants are within walking distance. Took the shuttle bus from the hotel to Funchal for a day trip.

Lovely hotel, very clean, staff friendly and efficient, lots of little areas to use as shared among 3 hotels, not an issue for us, but may be for some, Madeira hilly so lots of steps, ( lifts available). Local restaurants served lovely food and reasonable prices, local bus to Funchal on time, good to use as a base

The hotel itself was lovely, our room was modern, clean with a great sea view. The hotel has an indoor and outdoor pool, we used the outdoor pool quite a bit, also clean and modern. There were plenty of sun loungers, both by the pool and on several lido decks overlooking the sea, however a number of lido decks and access to a small beach area were closed off, it looked like they hadn't been open for some time. The only downside to this hotel was the restaurant, the hotel is part of a larger complex and you have to use the restaurant in the Roco Mar hotel nextdoor if you are half-board. We found the restaurant to be very impersonal, on our first night it was fairly chaotic, we weren't sure whether we should seat ourselves, how the buffet worked, how to order drinks etc the staff were busy rushing around so we felt a little lost. The food in the restaurant is buffet food which we were never that impressed with either. We did visit the Lee Hamilton snack bar most evenings for cocktails. This is another little cafe on the hotel site. The two ladies who worked in there were really friendly and welcoming, we did enjoy our evenings here. On our last night we chose to miss our half-board meal and ate here instead, it's also a steak house, the food was amazing and the portions were large! Another plus point of the hotel was on my birthday, they sent a bottle of sparkling wine to our room as a gift, this was a lovely gesture. Canico itself is a little quiet, but there are regular busses to Funchal for €2.20. To wrap up, a lovely hotel, but the restaurant could do with being more organised and welcoming

We stayed here in February/March 2022. This is a 3 hotel set up, with Royal Orchid (currently under complete renovation) and Roca Mar. We checked in at Roca Mar, but our room was in Oliveira just up the road. The restaurant & bar were at the Roca Mar, accessed either by street, or along the back of the hotel by the sea view cliff walk. The staff there were very friendly and helpful, especially in the bar mixing a mean Mojita. There were plenty of outdoor tables and chairs, where you could spill out from the restaurant and enjoy al fresco dining. We didn't realise at the time of booking that the hotel was primarily used by German guests, and we missed chatting to fellow British holiday makers. We stayed here for two weeks, and the menu was the same each week. The usual salads, fish, pasta, meat & vegetarian options, not much choice on the desserts; so a little disappointing. Breakfast choices were good, with lovely bread rolls, but no toaster available. Good coffee machines, serve yourself. There was an indoor, but unheated pool - chilly in Feb, but would be lovely in summer, and an outdoor pool too, with plenty of sun loungers - if only it had been warm enough to lay on one! Our room had a balcony with sea view, a little dated, but a comfortable bed with plenty of pillows, comfy armchairs with table & chairs both inside and on the balcony. It was serviced daily, bedding changed several times during our two week stay, and kept very clean. We are fairly fit in our late 60's, but found that the hotel, built into the cliffs, had lots of stairs whichever way you went, and was a little daunting at times. Unfortunately this is not a hotel for older guests and definitely not wheelchair friendly.

First time in Maderia and it won't be the last, as we will return to this hotel. Room, A studio type with tea and coffe making facilite, microwave, fridge and cooking area. Spotlessly cleaned through our 3 week stay. Beds very comfortable. Lovely bathroom with great shower. Internet Is free and was available in your room and hotel etc. No problem there. Food Excellent choices for breafast, lunch and dinner. The staff at the bars and restaurant were amazing. Drinks package. Wonderful lager which is made in Madeira. White wine was excellent. My partner tried the red wine/ sangria/vodka and other's and said they were all amazing ( not all at once!) Sunbathing. Plenty of sunbeds for everyone. We were on a sun terrace on ou rown for three weeks. If you want a great chill out and to escape from the masses then this is the place for you.

Flew out 20/12 for what should have been a Christmas/New Year break & our 3rd visit to the island in 15 mths. Unfortunately we had to fly back 27/12 due to new covid restrictions on the island. This is a great hotel with friendly & helpful staff who coped well with the covid protocols. We were upgraded to a sea view room on arrival & it was spacious with plenty of storage space. The cliff top position give impressive views of the surrounding area & there are shops nearby. The system has obviously changed since our last visit to Madeira in Sept. 2020 as all meals were a la carte & served freshly cooked to your table. Very easy to overeat as all meals were at least courses. The gala dinner on Christmas eve & Christmas day dinner were superb. My only minor gripes were that the mattresses were too soft for my taste & the hot water supply was variable. Overall I can recommend this hotel & would stay here again.
