when the building works are finished this will be just about right. Rooms could do with a paint and coffee/tea facilities but its lovely atmosphere makes up for it. Beautiful bay with lovely walks nearby including roman/greek ruins. The hotel food is fab and staff are lovely - make sure you know a bit of spanish though! Only 1/2 hour... more

I stayed with my mother for 2 nights in November. Very quiet and def. off season. The staff treated us very kindly and with great consideration. They lit the huge log fire on a wet afternoon and kept it burning - just for us. The waiting staff couldnt have been more efficient AND caring. Plus the food- the lunch was... more

The Hostal Empuries is as romantic as it gets. Located in its own secluded beach, next to the Empuries Greek ruins and five minutes walk to a little hill village. Just perfect! The hotel is obviously run (I guess) by young people and has a nice atmosphere. We had a refurbished room, which was very simple yet perfect. If anything,... more

This hotel has clearly had some major makeover since some of the previous reviews; we found it delightful, exactly meeting our needs in a charming, generous way. After having come to expect that every hotel I will ever go to, since I can't afford the boutique category, will have synthetic bedspreads and nasty melamine wardrobes, I loved the rough linen... more

Arriving at the Hostel - things start off well. It is right on the beach with a great terrace. Unfortunately, they got worse quickly. The hotel staff though not unfriendly was incapable of solving any (of the many problems) that arose for us. Our room lacked light bulbs, had bugs, and at high season, there wasn't enough staff to manage... more

upon arrival we were told, lo siento. they were overbooked. so they stuck us in what appeared to be a closet not normally rented (the 'only room unrehabilitated in the hotel'). we had no air conditioning, no light bulbs (!), a broken shower, and we were given the room normally (it appeared) used to keep extra gear for the maids... more

After a slightly shaky start with a confusion over arrival dates, we settled down into the perfect family beach holiday. The room was great - clean, simple, good towels, fab shower, ante-room for the kids. The restaurant was lovely - with a terrace overlooking the beach & breakfast was simple, slightly chaotic & sometimes outside but just what you expect... more

It was our first time to stay at a "hostal" in Spain. Reservation made direct to the hotel by phone was handled properly and clearly, followed by their confirmation fax. On arrival, our check-in was smooth enough. As expected as hostal, the room and the facilities appear to be quite wild. It may be a bit too wild for our... more

First impression of the hotel was very good with a fantastic beachside location and an interesting "shabby chic" patio and restaurant area. Unfortunately things went down hill very quickly. On checking in we discovered that the family room we'd booked in advance was not available. The hotel wanted us to move to a double room with two extra z-beds for... more

Lovely small hotel: rooms plain and unmodernised but functional. But, they do look right onto the Mediterranean at the steps of the hotel and what more could you want? Perfectly OK staff, lovely restaurant of very good quality for breakfast and other meals. The Greek-Roman site of Ampurias is immediately behind, 15mins walk from L'Escala (anchovy capital of Spain), lovely... more
