We went for the historic nature of this place and for the live entertainment (blue grass music). We reserved the first floor two bedroom, kitchen and yard suite. We got there and were told we were "upgraded" to a second floor room. It was a 3 bedroom with split bathroom (toilet in one room, sink and bath in another and... More

This is a cool place. We went to the saloon and had burgers and drinks. The burgers were very good and they had a good beer selection. I had a bloody mary that was awesome but that may depend on which bartender you get. It is just a great place to kick back and relax.

As other reviewers have said to stay at the Occidental Hotel is a historical experience not to be missed. The entire hotel is a museum filled with artifacts portraying the history of this wonderful hotel and region. We had phoned ahead and reserved the Owen Wister room as we had recently read the great book The Virginian. But when we... More

We stayed one night for our 20th wedding anniversary. The hotel is steeped in history and reminds me of staying at my grandparents ranch. There is a community coffee pot and microwave in a pantry upstairs. The hotel was quiet (except for the squeaky floorboards) and the staff was very friendly. We would stay again the next time we are... More

This historical old hotel is wonderful and is a great tourist attraction. Rooms are large and well appointed. The staff is delightful and knowledgable about the place. Situated over a stream, it is restful and quiet. The Virginian Restaurant is a treat as a historical restaurant. Though the meals are good, they are pricey. The back rooms are quieter than... More

Honestly, I have read reviews written prior to this one and I don't know what to add to the five-star reviews because they have covered just about everything. This is was of the most amazing hotels I have ever stayed in, for historic reasons, uniqueness, gorgeousness....you name it! I can't wait to return from Virginia and bring other family members.... This is one of the coolest places I have ever stayed... There is history around every corner and if the history of the West is interesting to you then this is the place to see and enjoy. Add to that the Saloon is a great place to have a drink or a pint. We stayed here on Thursday night for... More

What a beautiful place full of wonderful history. Built in 1880, the hotel still showcases many of its original features and furnishings. The saloon and restaurant are also original. Some of the famous or infamous that have stayed there are Butch Cassidy and the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang, Calamity Jane, Buffalo Bill, Tom Horn, Ernest Hemingway, the young Teddy Roosevelt... and many... The Occidental really lives its history and is very central to your stay. This is a building that has history all over its walls with photos, books, clothes, quilts and its furniture. Each of the rooms has its own history, so you get a sense about either who has stayed in a room - Butch Cassidy, the brothel, just among... More

This quaint bit of western living history is the place to stay if you want something different to the usual chain hotels. Each of the rooms is furnished differently with Victorian antiques and decor. The reception staff were really welcoming, taking the time to provide us with information and answers to our numerous questions about the place. The floorboards creak,... More
