My husband and I stayed two nights here and was upgraded to a room with an attached bathroom with no extra charge, and we were delighted with this. The house and grounds were impeccably kept and it shows that the owners take pride in keeping their place spotless!!! They offered for guests' use, the lanai, a sitting area, and use... more

I was travelling with my mother, and we are from WI. We have been to Hawaii 3 times before, and always stay at B&Bs- we love the hospitality and meeting some of the locals. Our stay at Areca Palms truly was a low point of the trip. We only met Janice, who while initially nice, was extremely anal about keeping... more

We regret our establishment did not live up to her expectations but the guests did pay the $110 plus tax. I feel they omitted the tax when referring to cost. A two night stay and only saw the guests in the morning. We have not have restrictions on shower times in many years. We have an introductory letter in room...

We stayed in the Lanai Room for 4 nights in late March. First, let me respond to some of the earlier reviews about the “controlling hosts.” I found Janice to be very pleasant, friendly and firm. You can’t have people in and out of your home/business without some rules. And they are clearly stated when you make your reservation. Steve... more

Had a vacation which will always be remembered. Fantastic food, accommodations and great snorkeling nearby. Was with friends and enjoyed sitting out on the Lanai in the evenings sharing wine and events. Hosts very informative on all the best hidden restaurants and things to see. Hope we may return next year. Great location to see and do everything. A beautiful... more

Areca Palms is an excellent choice for a quiet stay and it's conveniently located for trips around the island . You need a car, however, but that's probably true for most B&Bs in Hawaii. The rooms are clean, cozy and well equipped. We stayed in two of the four rooms and liked the bigger one clearly better. The queensize bed... more

We spent 5 nights at Areca Palms and it was a wonderful experience. This B&B is located in Captain Cook, about 10 miles South of Kailua Kona and roughly 400 meters above sea leverl: this proved to be a conveniente location. It's it a peaceful place out of Kailua, but the town is still easy and quick to reach. It's... more

Not sure why the Areca gets mixed reviews. We thought it was great. From the moment you walk in to the massive Lanai (perfect for cocktails at sunset) and main room, with comfy sofas, ample reading materiel, and a very cosy atmosphere through to the vast garden and hidden away rooms. You really feel like you're miles away from anything... more

Well, let's start with the good things - breakfast was served on a really great porch with a view of the meticulous yard and many palm trees. The food was wonderful and the hostess very friendly. They had lots of reference books and brochures available to figure out where to eat and where to play and helped us sort that... more

We stayed here for a few days and it was not a very pleasant experience. We just did not feel very welcome. In most bed and breakfast establishments, you have more privacy and more freedom - not here! The food is good but the rest - look elsewhere... the hosts just aren't very gracious. more

This review is very late coming but better late than never! We were on the Big Island for two weeks, and stayed in several B&B's around the island, Areca Palms was by far our best experience. Steve and Janice are WONDERFUL! Janice helped us get the most of our time in the area and arranged tickets for a snorkeling cruise.... more
