The Hilo Honu Inn is a recently renovated, craftsman style bed & breakfast located just blocks from downtown Hilo. Spectacular ocean view from Samurai Suite. 10 minutes from the airport and convenient to many area attractions. Great home base for Volcanoes National Park and the east side of the Big Island. See waterfalls and tropical gardens. Visit Mauna Kea observatory and Imiloa Planetarium. Watch sea turtles (honu) swim at local black sand beaches.

This is one inn I never wanted to leave. The lovely home situated on top of one of the main streets in Hilo made it easy to walk anywhere, from downtown to Rainbow Falls. The house was lovingly decorated, a combination of historical antiques and modern conveniences. The Bali Hai suite was spacious, the tv worked (unlike at any of the other places we stayed in during our 3 week trip to the Big Island). The “car wash” luxury shower was a blessing to come back to after a long day of sightseeing. Mornings started out with good coffee in the dining room, followed by a delicious home cooked breakfast a half hour later. Best of all were breakfast morning chats with our host and hostess, both of them artists/craftspeople with unique perspectives of life and culture on the Big Island. If you inquire with an open mind and a respectful attitude, they are very generous sharing a wealth of information. Travel for us means more than seeing new things and entertainment (although we did those things). The highlight of travel is meeting new people who can give you a sense of place. Gay and Koa did that for us, and we would gladly return to visit them again. Mahalo nui, Gay and Koa!…

Clean and comfortable. Great breakfasts. Good starting point to visit Volcanoes National Park and the North-eastern and South-eastern coast of the Big Island. The hosts are very nice and helpful with suggestions of places to visit, things to do and places to eat.

Gay and Koa were enthusiastic and knowledgeable hosts. Breakfasts each day were delicious. Their restaurant and travel tips were great. And our room, the Samurai Suite, was amazing. The second floor room was first constructed as a formal Japanese tea room with each piece fabricated in Japan and then constructed piece by piece in the home. Every touch is amazing. Our room was spacious with great views of the sunrise over Hilo Bay. Highly recommend -- an easy drive to downtown and everywhere else in the region.

We had a fabulous time at Hilo Honu Inn for 3 nights. Gay and Koa were fabulous hosts and every breakfast was delicious, always including all sorts of local fruit followed by a fresh made hot entree. Comfortable room, lovely common area and easy, free parking. Great location in a quiet neighborhood less than a mile from downtown and all the restaurants and Farmers Market. Would definitely stay with them again . . .

What can I say? The B&B was perfect! Great location. Walking distance to the shops in Hilo. Accommodations are so comfortable and food was great! It is by far the best B&B I have stayed at. Gay and Koa are so comfortable to be with. Made new friends! Mahalo and A Hui Hou!!

We had a wonderful stay and enjoyed the personalised service provided by Gay and Koa. They offered wonderful advice for touring the area and places to eat. We stayed in the Samurai suite which was perfect for my family. The bed was very comfortable and we enjoyed watching the sun rise each morning. Breakfast was fresh and delicious and included interesting chats about the Island and local culture. I recommend this Inn.

We were delighted with our stay at Hilo Honu Inn! I highly recommend Hilo Honu Inn for a wonderful experience in Hilo. The best aspect of Hilo Honu Inn is the extraordinary Aloha spirt, warmth and friendliness of the hosts Gay and Koa. We stayed three nights stay in the Bali Hai Suite which is very spacious, clean, and well furnished. The queen size four poster bed was super comfortable for a good sleep. Hilo Honu Inn is in a quiet residential neighborhood, yet close to downtown restaurants and attractions. A highlight of our stay was the amazing breakfasts! Every day Gay and Koa served a generously sized breakfast with a nice mix of various fresh fruits and delicious hot cooked items, plus great coffee, and juice. It was helpful having a fridge in our room and the Bali Hai Suite’s spa like shower was probably the best shower of any B&B we have visited. Off street parking is spacious and easy to get in and out.…

It's impossible to say what was nicer -- the very comfortable and private accommodations in the Samurai Suite, which was beautifully appointed, or the hosts, who made splendid breakfasts and provided us with hours of insight on local culture and practices. The neighborhood is nice, within walking distance of restaurants and shopping, and we had a terrific view of New Year's Eve fireworks over Hilo, which were spectacular. We highly recommend this utter gem of a B & B.

Our family of 4 stayed in the Samurai Suite, and it was absolutely lovely! The suite was very spacious and private as it encompasses the entire 2nd floor. The architecture in the master suite is stunning as it was commissioned by the original owner to be handcrafted in Japan, disassembled & shipped to Hawaii, and rebuilt in traditional Japanese style without using nails. To add to the ambiance and authenticity of the room, it has photos of the original owners and artwork, vases, and other heirlooms making it feel both historic and homey. It also has a quaint and cozy sitting room with an ocean view in the distance. Our kids stayed in the second bedroom in the suite, and it worked well for them as there were two twin beds. We appreciated that there were two separate sink areas so multiple people could brush teeth and get ready at the same time. One sink and mirror is located at the end of the hallway between the 2nd bedroom and the bathroom. There is a door from that area that leads directly into a fabulous spa-like shower and huge soaker tub room. This bathing room has another door that leads to a room with another sink and toilet. It made it easy for all of us to get ready in the mornings. The absolute best part was getting to know our hosts, Gay and Koa! They are such warm and welcoming people - so easy to talk to and full of fascinating stories. We enjoyed a homemade breakfast of guava sweetbread French toast with multiple unique and local syrups, fresh fruit (some of which they picked from their own property!), fresh juices, and Kona coffee - all of which was absolutely delicious. We got lucky as we were the only guests that morning, so we were able to visit for a couple of hours with Gay and Koa before we left. They were a wealth of knowledge of the area and Hawaii in general. They had great recommendations on restaurants to try and key sites to see while we were there. Honestly, we were sad to leave them because we enjoyed their company so much, but the volcanoes national park was calling us for our next adventure. When (not if!) we go back to the Big Island, we will look forward to staying at the Hilo Honu Inn and catching up with Gay and Koa. Hands down, this was one of the most special experiences we had during our two week Hawaiian vacation. Our advice - don't hesitate! Book it now!…

The hosts of this lovely B&B truly live the Aloha Spirit and convey it both personally to their guests and physically through their comfortable, clean and well-appointed accommodations. The Inn is well-situated to enjoy all that the Hilo area offers. We feel fortunate to have discovered it and so will you.
