Perched on a hill overlooking the silver crescent of Hilo Bay sits a grand old family house that has lived and breathed and stilled and been revived for a century. The hosts, Barbara & Gary will sit at breakfast with you and exchange stories of the area's past and give you all the information you need for your day's explorations... more

Shipman House is one of the loveliest homes in the Hawaiian Islands, and each painting and every piece of furniture gracing its rooms is burnished with the history of these beautiful Islands. Beauty resides here -- both simple in its grace and complex in its exoticism. Like the Islands themselves, the house embraces contradictions in generous harmony. What else does... more

My wife and I are frequent visitors to Hawaii which we love. This was our first stay in Hilo and the Shipman House. It was perfect and I would not hesitate to recommend it to my best friends and even some relatives. I don't want the word to get around to too many folks but this place is special for... more

Shipman House is a not so hidden treasure. The minute you cross the bridge you become breathless with the beauty and charm of the home and stay that way during your whole visit. Barbara and Gary are superb hosts and are a wealth of information. You are well advised to take their advice as every word is of value. We... more

We stayed three nights in this charming B&B that was built in 1898 and has been in the Shipman family since about 1900. Most of the furniture is totally fabulous koa and other Hawaian woods, there are beautiful orchids throughout the house, the house has been wonderfully refinished, breakfast is on a porch overlooking the bay with fruit mostly from... more

Stay Here. Just like us, you want to visit the Hilo area while enjoying the comfort of a B&B rather than the sterile environment of a hotel. You've found it...and should call for a reservation today! When you read the other reviews you'll hear all of the Shipman House guests 'swoon' over the home, and rightfully so: it is overwhelming... more

The Shipman House is a wonderful, historic home that has been beautifully refurnished featuring comfortable and relaxing amenities, breathtaking views and the most spectacular breakfasts. The Andersons are gracious hosts and provide excellent suggestions for visitors to enjoy the city of Hilo and area. I would love to stay here again. more

Shipman House is a refreshing departure from other accomodations. We stayed in the carriage house. The room was spacious and comfortable. Our private bathroom was nicely decorated. The house and grounds are surrounded by the lush foliage. I found the atmoshpere very relaxing. It was fun to read the history of the main house and explore its many rooms. Owners,... more

We just returned from a truly marvelous stay at the Shipman House. What a unique chance to stay in a beautifully restored, very historical mansion. You can really get a sense of what Hawaii used to be like. It is a haven of peace and beauty. It is a great location from which to explore the volcano, and this very... more

"Jack London slept in this bedroom" and "The Queen of Hawaii would come to dinner, then play the grand piano while smoking a cigar"...these, and many other stories are in this glorious and exceptionally well-maintained Victorian home that's been in the Shipman family for over 100 years. The home reminded us of homes back in our native New England, but... more
