We visited the Big Island for the thanksgiving week. Initially we stayed at a manicured luxury condo resort and moved to Hale Makamae to tour the volcano region... While the facilities were modest, John and Petra made our stay the best memorable experience of the entire week. IT FELT LIKE VISITING A VERY DEAR FAMILY. We arrived late night, after... more

What better way to experience living in Hawai'i and be carefree to go sightseeing and soak in the beauty of the island. The B&B is nestled in a beautiful tropical garden to take your mind off of the hectic, commercialized world on the mainland. The parking was spacious. Our room was clean and very comfortable with modern bathroom. The dining/common... more

The owners Petra and John are very friendly and gave lots of good advices during our visit. We had to alter our plans due to a heavy storm and they were very helpful w/ the recommendations. Breakfast is excellent and the grounds are beautiful. The only minor issue is the noise from the roof when it's raining hard. Otherwise, it's... more

Petra and John were great. Upon our arrival, both were very welcoming. Petra greeted us and showed us to our room. She was full of helpful hints, must sees and places to eat while we stayed on this side of the island. Our room was very clean, very new and very nice. They have a very nice setup here. The... more

My wife and I had a wonderful time at Hale Makamae B&B. I've been to the Big Island many times before, and this is the best lodging I've ever experienced on the eastern (Hilo) side of the Big Island. Pretty much all the hotels I stayed at in previous years were in Hilo, and every single one of them was disappointing.... more

We stayed for one night at Hale Makamae when going to see the lavaflow. We stayed in the Garden Suite and it was a very nice experience. The rooms were spacious, very clean and quiet as they faced the big garden. Petra and John were gracious hosts and Petra helped us with extra flashlights and good advice when we wanted... more

We stayed in the Garden Suite for 5 nights. Petra and John go out of their way to make visitors feel at home. They are sincerely interested in their guests and took the time to provide us with helpful suggestions for all there is to see in the area (volcano, lava viewing, local beaches, parks and gardens, markets, restaurants) and... more

We stayed at this place for 3 nights and we very happy to stay here. It is a good base for the whole east coast but even better if you want to make the lavaboat tour as the meting point is only 2 minutes away (if you are on the island do that tour, it is worth the money. You... more

After much on-line searching for a hotel/B&B to stay in for our 3 days of seeing the Hilo area, Volcano Park, the Lava Ocean dawn cruise (not to be missed -- as John Tucker, Hale Makamae host says: "the best bang for the buck when it comes to volcanoes!") and the Pahoa area, this was recommended and it was a... more

The hosts Petra and John are very welcoming, full of suggestions and serve a wonderful, healthy breakfast. Most of the fruits come from their own gardens, which are beautifully maintained. I'd recommend anyone to stay there, especially if you are going to see the lava flow by Kalapana, or if you want to explore the South-Hilo area. Very kid friendly.... more
