Starting in 1997, I stayed at Hale Makai 6 times with my husband and two other couples, each couple renting a different cottage. Through the years we stayed in each cottage, though not #5, the two bedroom in back. When we first visited, Hale Makai was a run down but clean, affordable and friendly place in the best of locations.... more

My husband and I visited Hawaii for 2 weeks in October and he was concerned about staying in a place without air conditioning, so while on Kauai we stayed in cottage three for four nights and at a resort for five nights. The verdict was that we wished we had stayed in the Hale Makai for the entire visit. The... more

Our family of five had a great week staying in Cottage 5. Very quite and relaxing. While it was windy at the beach in front of the cottage every day, we found it great for snorkling. Short distance was Tunnels Beach...truly amazing. We drove to Tunnels one day and walked another. We drove about 15 minutes to the beach at... more

I read the reviews here before I reserved a week at the Hale Makai Cottages, so I'm going to try to be very specific about the details that no one else mentioned. There are 5 cottages. #2 and #3 are the closest to the ocean. #1 and #4 are slightly back, but still have ocean views, and #5 is the... more

We booked at last minute trip to Kauai and thought it would be fun to try something different for a change. The property location and the cottage was very nice, however the customer service was very sad. One would expect that if you are willing to pay top dollar you should receive excellent service. We had a difficult time just... more

Wow! What an amazing place to spend our first week together as a married couple. We stayed in cottage #3 and had an amazing view of the ocean from sunrise to sunset. We felt like we had the place to ourselves, and rarely saw the other guests staying in the other 4 cottages. To our delight, we found that the... more

We had a great time here. The cottage was right on the beach so several times we made meals at the cottage and ate right on the beach. It was great to be able to hear the beach and watch the sun rise when we woke up in the morning. The cottage was newly remodeled and had everything we needed.... more

The place is beautiful - we stayed in cottage 4; location-wise, there's hardly a difference among them - and well reflected by the website. One settles right in to the beauty of the north shore of Kauai, here. (A few things to know for the trip: no laundry here, no dresser for clothes.) Other than that, enjoy paradise! more

We took a pre Holiday trip with two other couples to Kauai and stayed at the Hale Makai Cottages in Haena. The cottages are tucked away within a residential neighborhood on a beautiful and carefully attended to beach front property. The cottages are kept very clean and feel very cozy and private. They have stone floors, beautiful bathrooms, elegant and... more

My family and I stayed at Hale Makai cottages in July 2007. we've been to Kauai before, and stayed at several nice places, including the Princeville resort, but Hale Makai was definitely our favorite. Overall, we really enjoyed our trip, but i did have a few problems. The Good - We stayed in cottage 3, a 1 bedroom, and it... more
