A fine place for an overnight stay. Share cooking facilities, but you get a nice private room. Bring your own food, as little opportunity to buy food in Hana. The road around Maui, continuing clockwise is easily passible by rental cars, regardless of what rental agencies say. Tom more

Joe's place is basically a hostel with a clean kitchen to cook in and basic beds with no air conditioning in the bedrooms. There's a ceiling fan in each room. The bathrooms are shared and an old TV was in the living room. The place is a bit tattered around the edges but we are staying here for a second... more

Stayed at Joe's for 2 days just decompressing in Hana. Started in a room with 2 twin beds (what we asked for) second day Ed allowed us to switch to a room with a single bed at no extra cost. Could use a little more cleaning in the kitchen but very nice for a hostel. I suggest buying some native... more

I had read reviews about this place and knew what to expect. it is a fairly clean no-frills place to stay. Just like a hostel. For only about $50 a night, you get a hot shower, bed, and kitchen if you need to cook. We had a shared shower, and it was fine. The furniture is old and there is... more

Just got back from Hana after attending a family reunion there with all of my ohana from the area. The event was beautiful! However after arriving in Hana after a long drive my brothers and I were taken aback by the unfriendly owner of this bare bones boarding house. Not even a friendly greeting and not what you would expect... more

Joe's place exceeded our expectations. We got the room with the private bath for $65 a night. (great deal for Hawaii) This is a house with a bunch of rooms. The rooms and house were clean and it was fun to talk with the other travelers from Europe and Canada in the common kitchen and living room. Bring some food... more

You cannot find a better bargain in picturesque Hana. For around $55 you get a private room in a quiet house with all linens, towels and sheets, and guest soap provided. Stop and pick up food in Kahului before driving out because there is no supermarket, just a small store in Hana. Ed can give you a map of the... more

Stayed one night in the ensuite room, #8. No problems at all, just a bit scruffy. Comfortable bed, clean linen, towels and soap provided. more

So "basic" would be overstating things a bit. We had two rooms at Joe's and stayed one night. Surprisingly, it was the only place in Hana that would return our calls/emails. This was supposedly the end of the high season, in an off-year for tourism, but no one else wanted our money. Hana itself would be worth the visit if... more

I made the agregious mistake of saying "Hey" on the phone when I called. "HEY" is how we say hello where I live and apparently very much taboo with this guy as when I arrived he stated in a heated, gruff, nasty tone that I had called him "HEY" 3 times and his 1st name was not "HEY" I politely... more
