I stayed at the Makaha Cabanas for 10 days in August 2009. I chose the location to be away from the busy Waikiki area. It also rains far less on this side of the island. In hindsight, I found 10 days in Waianae too long given that many of the attractions in Oahu are in Honolulu, Windward coast or North Shore. I spent several hours each day driving on H1.
While it was nice to relax on a very clean beach, I was warned by a resident to not be outside the gated compound at night. I also heard sirens several times each night as well.
I also stayed a few days in Waikiki and the cost of the condo was the same as in Waianae.
My final thoughts, stay in Waianae a few days to just relax and read by the beach. If you want to see other Oahu sights, you'd be better of staying on the windward side or in Honolulu. And yes, lock your car and do not leave anything of value in clear sight inside!
