Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I have stayed at this location 3 times over the past 15 years. This is the first time in a while, and it seems to be a little less than I remebered. The location is perfect but not having any staff on-site is a little concerning. If you are looking for a place close to most things this is the place foe you. The contact we had was attentive and helpful so that was good.

Property's Favourite Review
Cozy inn in the heart of North Beach. Many restaurants and bars nearby and a big green space across the street. Other than a cleaning person there is no staff on site, but that was not an issue for me. Nice lobby with a coffee maker and water. I feel at home here. One concern for anyone who may have trouble carrying luggage upstairs - no elevator. Otherwise a good place to stay if you want to be in North Beach.

My first trip to San Francisco was a 50+ year old female embarking on my also first, solo trip to the west coast ever. This hotel was the absolute perfect choice in the perfect location for me. Easy entry, they text you a code to let yourself in the lobby. My flight landed about 3 hrs before check in but a cleaning lady immediately asked my name and they dropped everything to get me into my room within 20 minutes of arriving. There is no front desk person, they text you a code to your room...all very easy to navigate. I did bring a small soft side cooler along because I read there is no frig in the rooms. There is an ice maker available though so I kept my pop in the shower in the cooler covered with ice....worked great!! Also bring with plenty of plug in adapters for electronics...this is a historic building so I was prepared but just FYI. The lobby has free coffee, ice water, tea and more available along with an ice maker. Overall the hotel was clean and had such a cozy vibe. Located in North Beach, easy walk to the Wharf, China Town, Coit Tower and more. Two blocks to cable car stop, bus stops and more. North Beach in itself has bars, restaurants, parks, and more within a block or two...so easy. Quaint neighborhood...LOVED IT. I stayed in the Junior Suite with a window seat overlooking the park and cathedral. WELL worth a few bucks extra!!! I would 10000% stay here again!!!

The staff is uncaring about trying to help guests enjoy their stay. We rented 11 of the 16 rooms over Labor Day weekend. The showers need an odd push and pull of the handle to expel the water, in most rooms there was a page explaining the process - in 2 of the rooms there was not. Staff did not respond to texts. Luckily we had many guests there and they eventually got help from other guests. The money saving technique of having no staff on site, is flawed. It may be profitable for them to eliminate staff but the guest experience suffers. Especially when they do not respond to texts for hours or at all. I love to support Boutique hotels as they usually provide a unique "special" Experience. Washington Inn was not able to provide personal or caring touches as they were not present on site. Location is outstanding - right in North Beach. But if they hope for repeat business, they need to provide a better experience for their guests

Good things: Location Bad things: This is not a hotel, this is a hostel at best If you are over 30 do not go there. No reception except by 'phone. We never saw the reception occupied. We arrived late (about 10pm) due to flight delays. If it had not been for the taxi driver, we would have been on the street all night. He was able to contact somebody on his 'phone who gave him the entry code for the numeric key pad for entry. (which I can understand as there was never any staff around). The room was tiny, no wardrobe of any sort. Unable to connect to internet. Broken blinds. Very lumpy pillows (the actual bed was OK). It was described as "Standard-King-Ensuite" "Be aware this is not a hotel." More like a rooming house. You are entirely on your own

We have stayed at the inn many times over the years and this stay, which may be our last, was disappointing. I don't understand the no staff thing. There should always be at least one staff person on duty. I know that means more overhead but I would willingly pay extra for the service. I could not figure out the TV/cable and there was no instructions and no one to ask. I normally have no problem operating electronic devices. Not this time. The AM light breakfasts and PM wine and nibbles were always looked forward to. Again, I would willingly pay the extra to bring these back. Also I was a little surprised that the loading zone parking space in front was given over to the restaurant next door (which was closed). I've always liked the Washington Square Inn because of its amazing location and charm. Sadly the charm has mostly gone.

The "deluxe queen room with ensuite bathroom" is a shoe box. The shower door literally touches the toilet when open and the vanity sink is outside of the bathroom. There is a laptop size TV with cable. Due to the 'covid pandemic' there is no one at front desk or anywhere other than morning cleaning staff. There is no more continental breakfast (covid)- just a keurig machine and tap water jug. Recently the rooms have been outfitted with dressers from Chinatown that won't last long. The area is great and this hotel has great potential so it's really sad to see what happened.

The hotel is very cute. Small, but nice. However, we FROZE all night. A December night, the room was very cold. We found the small wall heater but it was insufficient. We were painfully cold. I had to put on socks, leggings, nightgown and finally my fleece sweatshirt.

Hello Kimberly, thanks for posting a review. We are sorry to read your room was very cold. You must have stayed during one of the very few cold days/nights we experience in the San Francisco Bay Area. We will relay your feedback to our Staff and make sure that in-room heaters get turned on prior to guests checking-in, during very cold days. Thanks and happy 2023!

We booked this hotel through Expedia, booked a standard double room with private bathroom looked fantastic on the photos. Before we arrived we had a code sent to our mobile giving us the combination to the front door and instructions to download a app to open your room door When we arrived there There were no hotel staff , we final entered the hotel and room to find a very small room approx 13ft square with no bathroom, tried to call the numbers that where at the hotel all we got where answer machines, we eventual contacted Expedia who got the manager to call and he said to knock on the door of the room next to us to use their bathroom Explained this to Expidia they moved us to another hotel . IF YOU DECIDE TO USE THIS HOTEL BE PREPARED TO SHARE BATHROOM FACILITIES WITH OTHER HOTEL GUESTS

Hello. We are sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay. However, allow us to add some information to your review which is not showing correct information. Front Desk. We are no longer able to guarantee 24/7 front desk staff. This is clearly advertised on all our communication platforms, including our own website. We encourage our guests to always check our website before booking a room. Check-in instructions are sent via email 24 hours prior to check-in. A text message with instructions on how to download the OpenKey app is sent as soon as the room is ready and guests are welcome to check-in. Shared bathroom. All rooms at Washington Square Inn come with private bathrooms. Out of the 15 rooms, 13 have ensuite bathrooms, whereas 2 have private bathrooms located across the hallway. This means that the bathroom is private (and not shared) and it is simply located outside of the room (across the hallway, 2 steps away from the room entrance door). Once again this is clearly stated on all our booking and communication channels. Before booking, we always recommend reading the room descriptions. We hope you will reconsider staying with us in the future, maybe selecting one of our other room types (with ensuite bathroom)?

I was so excited to stay here since my son moved into the neighborhood and I wanted to find a local spot but sadly I won’t be going back. The contactless checkin process seemed fine except when you need something no one can help and they’re annoyed you asked. The water they provide is tap water which is fine but not when it’s stale. There are also coffee pods in the main reception area with some stained leather chairs. The room I stayed in was fine but small. Towels and bathroom was clean as were sheets. The armoire was in place of closet and only one door would open. The tv didn’t operate and when you’re solo it’s a nice to have but they didn’t seem to care when I asked about it. I got my coffee from a cafe and returned to drink it sitting at reception area. A gentleman came down with his underpants on and tshirt. Unacceptable where I come from. I ran errands in the morning only to return at 1030am and my key expired. Checkout is at 11am and they promised I could check out at noon. Again disappointed and when I called the gentleman was annoyed by my frustration. Thankfully the cleaning person was there to let me in. I won’t be staying again and you probably shouldn’t either.
