Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Pros: The hotel’s location is convenient to many restaurants, tourist sights and attractions and the area felt very safe to us. Our room was very clean and the breakfast had a wide variety of hot food options and was quite impressive. The valet parking was convenient and easy. Cons: The check-in process did not go well and left a very bad first impression with us. To start, the (2) Queen bed Bay View room type that we had purchased was not available upon arrival - we were told that this was due to the hotel being overbooked (i.e., they are ensuring that their hotel is always full from a revenue perspective…even if it impacts their customer’s experience). I could more easily see this being done to a customer who was only staying for 1 night…however, we were staying for 4 nights. We ended up with a room without a bay view and of a different room type. We were told that the new room was the same price…but, in the end, the (2) Queen beds and bay view combination was most important to us and why we booked this hotel. Next, we were given keys that did not unlock our door. We returned them, and the next set didn’t work either. Finally, they had to call engineering to fix / replace the batteries in the electronic lock. By the time we got our “final” room and had keys that worked, we had made 4 trips with all of our luggage back and forth between the front desk and various rooms of the hotel. Finally, I asked if we could be monetarily “comped” at least “something” for this experience and I was told “no” several times. Finally, they agreed to waive the $25/night guest amenity fee that is typically charged upon arrival. And, while the (reluctantly-given) waived fee was appreciated, after a 10-hr drive this check-in experience left us tired, frustrated and without the “bay view” (2) Queen bed room type we had purchased and been expecting.

Response from IHG Service, Owner at Holiday Inn Express & Suites San Francisco Fishermans Wharf, an IHG Hotel

Dear Sherry R, Thank you for selecting our Holiday Inn Express San Francisco Fishermans Wharf while visiting San Francisco and for providing feedback about your experience. It's a pleasure having you as our guest. I am truly sorry you did not experience an exemplary stay due to the service of our staff and your check-in experience. This is certainly below our usual high standard of service. Please be certain that I have noted and forwarded your feedback for the management to improve. In the middle of your experience, I am glad to know that our room's cleanliness, the quality of our breakfast, and the hotel's location were still appreciated. Please grant us the opportunity to prove ourselves again. Best Regards, Ben W. Case Manager IHG Hotels and Resorts Service

The hotel is very well located if you intend to visit SF and the area. We spent 4 nights there and the room was very quiet and comfortable. The breakfast is great and is included. The personnel was very professional. The only caveat is a quite expensive parking.

Stayed for five nights. Room was very big and had a great view out across Fishermans Wharf to Alcatraz Island. Spotlessly clean and well appointed room. Unlimited coffee and water in reception as well as a large fridge and coffee machine. Breakfast was pretty good considering it’s not a full restaurant. The staff were very friendly and helpful both reception staff and housekeeping. Will definitely stay at this hotel on our next visit

We booked at this hotel fairly last minute and were able to get a great rate. Even better is that we arrived at the hotel at 10am and lucky for us they were able to get us into our room then! The hotel was very clean and so was our room. The safe in the room, but I didn’t call that in so I am not holding that against them. What did keep me from giving the hotel 5* is that the bed was hard as a rock, I felt like I slept on a piece of plywood. Otherwise a great single night stay.

Check in was smooth, front desk staff very friendly and helpful. Excellent location. Valet parking staff very friendly as well. Great free buffet breakfast and helpful friendly staff to assist. Clean rooms, excellent housekeeping staff. Rooms well equipped with body soap, shampoo, conditioner, hand soap and moisturizer. In large bottles. Hair dryer. Also a keurig machine with tea and coffee choices. Also downstairs coffee and tea and water 24 hours. Beds also cozy. Would recommend this hotel to anyone. Business, couples, friends and families. Would return.

We have family in SFO. Over the years, we’ve tried all sorts of accommodations, from VRBO’s to premier hotels (eg Mark Hopkins) and other (Omni). Frankly, this was the best. Though in such a tourist area, our street (2 blocks away!) was quiet, as was our room, which was super-clean and comfortable. Walk to a plethora of restaurants. We had a room with two queens, a lounge chair, microwave and fridge. Very reasonably priced. Easy to catch Uber/Lyft to go anywhere. Only thing I was not happy was free breakfast, both quality and variety (same mediocre food every day, and we spent 8 days there).

Great location, close to everything you would like to see in SF, considering all what has been said about SF, this area is safe, we walked day and night almost everywhere without any issue, (note we didn't have a car).. breakfast was typical HI express, although it was fully packed on the new year eve day! Rooms are very big, with a safe, iron, etc. in the room. coffee and tea and iced water are always available in the lobby.. I liked the place, and will be back whenever we are in the area.

We stayed here for 7 nights for the convenient location. Very much enjoyed our stay. The staff were friendly and efficient. Props to the breakfast staff who kept the breakfast bar well stocked and spotless even when it was ridiculously busy. The rooms are spacious and clean. I look forward to staying here again in the future.

A holiday inn Express that routinely charges $160-$200 a night per room and charges you a $22 a night amenities fee on top of the room charge, ought to have a damn microwave in the room and a fridge that actually keeps your food cold. They have a community microwave towards the front lobby so if you're on a higher floor towards the back, you have a 5 minute walk to get to the microwave anytime you want to get up some food. For a day or two this is fine but if you are there for a longer stay, huge inconvenience. Front desk messed up a couple of Amazon deliveries. Bummy area. Paper thin walls, can hear everything in your neighbors room.

My mom and I were in San Francisco for the Queen and Adam Lambert concert and wanted to stay close to Fishermans Wharf. This hotel is perfectly located. 5 minute walk to Fishermans Wharf and 7 minutes to the Alcatraz Ticket Booth. It was also less than 5 minutes to the Big Bus Tour's first stop. We felt safe and so comfortable. We both slept well and enjoyed the complimentary breakfast. The staff were welcoming and friendly. We would definitely be back if we find ourselves in SF again.
