The Opal is optimally situated near some of the great San Francisco sites ... a modest walk to Fisherman's Wharf, the Marina, Lafayette Park, Cathedral Hill, the Opera, and the great car dealerships on Van Ness, along with some funky coffee shops, and more. The Opal is a classic, old hotel with great bones and interesting architectural features. The rooms... More

Pros: Clean room, comfortable bed (maybe a little firm, but not bad), good light in our corner room, pretty quiet, pretty centrally located and right on several bus lines, good breakfast (hard boiled eggs, yogurt, fruit, bagels, toast, juice, coffee), and a very friendly and helpful front desk staff. Cons: only one chair in our room for two, and NO... More

The Opal is reasonably priced and in a good location. Close to bus stops, trolly stops, this hotel is a great place to call home base in SF. Angela, the Service Agent at the counter, could not have been any more helpful. She pointed out some great places to eat and how to get around the transit system. Daily cost... More

The hotel is located just on Van Ness Avenue, relatively close to many attractions - City Hall, Union Square, Lombard Street and Golden Gate Bridge by bus/taxi. There is also a garage at the theatre next to the hotel, which costs just $20/night, cheap by SF's standard. The grey-hair gentleman at the front desk was moderately friendly and helpful. The... We only stayed here for one night, but I think the hotel is very reasonably priced compared to the vast majority of SF hotels. The staff were absolutely brilliant: they upgraded us because it was our honeymoon, they booked an airport shuttle for us and they stored our luggage all with a smile and genuine interest in us as guests.... In some ways I wish I'd paid more. Downstairs is fine and the staff are great but the rooms are very basic, the bathroom tiny and no facilities like tea making or even a safe. Furnishings are spartan and breakfast is like being in a youth hostel. That said, the location is great and you can pretty much get anywhere by... More

Its a funky hotel - its been around for awhile - and age adds to its character. Its in a good location to see the sights and there are convenient bus and trolley routes near by. The front desk staff are very helpful. Breakfast is unexciting continental but it saves having to find the first cup of coffee in the... More

Thank you for the review! The hotel is definitely a little funky. The term I typically use is that we are a quirky little San Francisco boutique hotel. Our hallways feel maze like to some, we are rumored to be haunted (request the third floor....or don't), and so we try to make those who are visiting feel at home even... More

I was so very impressed by San Francisco's Opal Hotel! Over the years I've visited several of the lower cost (Under $150/per-night) hotels in San Francisco. This past weekend I decided to give the Opal a try, here's what I found. The Opal is located on the southern edge of the San Francisco Nob Hill district. It's located directly on... More

Thank you for the glowing review! I am so happy that you enjoyed your stay. We look forward to seeing you again soon. I will warn readers that you are quite the walker and someone who is a little more of a meanderer will find the distances to take a little bit longer. Especially considering that the unsuspecting traveler might... More

Firstly, the hotel: Not too bad...clean, but very old and outdated-looking. An okay gym (treadmill, 2 bikes and some free weights), and an okay breakfast (not overly healthy or crazy selection, but toast, yogurt, fruit salad and hard-boiled egg). Staff were definitely great and were able to direct us tourists to the best places. Downside, well first, not really close... More

Thank you for the response, Our hotel is very centrally located in the heart of the city which is both great and challenging. It is great because no matter what attraction you want to see, we are sort of close to that attraction. However, when you are talking about specific places, you may have a bit of a trek ahead... Pretty good stay. Clean bathrooms and sheets. An okay breakfast - at least some fruit and bagels. If you want to stay at a good location this pretty much your only cheap option. The room smelled a little weird but was otherwise pretty good. Best part of it was that is was right next door to an awesome gym called... More

Thank you for the response, We definitely try to be an affordable option in a very expensive area and I am glad that you thought so. The hotel is on the older side and until we begin renovations, our hotel does have a sort of antique-y smell. It sort of reminds me of my grandmother's house, but maybe that's just... More
