We are from Alaska, and we don't make it "outside" very often...but when we do, we need it to be special! We have been to San Francisco three times, and each time we have stayed at the San Remo. It is SUCH a special place! The location is perfect-just blocks away from amazing places to eat, cable cars, Little Italy,... More

Over the last 10 years I have stayed here several times-- and I don't have any complaints. The hotel is gorgeous, it is like stepping back in time. Yes the rooms may be smaller than at chain hotels, you may have to (gasp) leave your room to shower or US the toilet. But there are plenty of facilities. The walls... More

First let me get the bad point's out of the way, the rooms are not large and not really equipped enough to be able to stay in when not sleeping, shared bathrooms (a personal issue as i just don't like this) and that's it for negative points. Now to the good things, this hotel is perfectly situated, hard to get... More

We appreciate your comments about our staff and hotel. Our hotel was built in 1906 and we have kept the design and layout intact, so indeed our rooms are small. We are here to provide the best experience possible for our guests in a historic setting. More

My friend, my dog and I really enjoyed our stay here. We first booked a room with one bed but when we arrived, Kenley graciously upgraded us into a 2 bed & sink room which we gratefully accepted. This place is so charming! There's no elevator or escalator. All of the rooms and the check in desk are on the... More

The San Remo is a treasure. The staff are helpful and friendly; the hotel is affordable & very conveniently located within walking distance of Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, and North Beach. The rooms are cozy and individually decorated in Victorian style. The shared bathrooms & showers are well kept, and I've never had to wait to use these facilities.

Your first difficulty if you drive to this location is going to be parking. Expect to pay up to $16.50 a day to park your car 2 blocks away at a parking garage. Once you get to the hotel you will need to climb 18 very steep stairs to get to the check in desk. No elevator. The staff are... More

Dear teasippinglou, Thank you for the nice comments about our location, cleanliness, and staff. We’re sorry that there were some points that you did not meet with your approval. Bringing a car to San Francisco and parking it can be an expensive proposition. We advise guests to leave their cars at home, but we welcome those on a road trip... More

I decided to give the San Remo 5 stars because what they do, they do very well. It is absolutely charming, the folks at the desk are very helpful and friendly, and the whole atmosphere is welcoming, homey, with some nice touches. Mini raisin boxes and mini soaps from Chinatown in the rooms; lemon water, coffee and tea in the... More

There are two deal breakers for this hotel for some people that I will mention right off so you can stop reading if they apply to you. Nothing worse then reading a great review and then discovering the deal breakers. 1 - Shared bathrooms that have separate toilets and showers. 2 - No lift and you are greeted with a... More

At first I was not so sure about this hotel, with no bathroom in the room, but decided to give it a try. Reviews were good. It really was a good choice for my sister and I. Hotel is a few blocks to Crooked Street, a block from Hyde Cable Car on/off, about four blocks to Fishermans Wharf & a... More

I've stayed at the San Remo twice for several days each time. The first time I was nervous about staying somewhere with a shared bathroom. Not to worry. The refurbished toilets are actually charming, with a pull chain on an overhead box, just like at my grandparents' home when I was a child. A toilet and shower (in separate rooms)... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
We are a family-owned historic boutique pension-style hotel located in North Beach, one of San Francisco’s oldest and most popular tourist destinations, and only a few blocks from Fisherman's Wharf. Built in 1906, our hotel maintains an atmosphere of Old-World charm and ambiance with specially selected antique furnishings - no two rooms are alike. The walls of the hotel are filled with a collection of memorabilia and history. Our style is simplicity and sanctuary - there are no room telephones, no televisions, and on the order of European pensions, shared baths which are meticulously cleaned daily, and are private when in use, but for all guests to use. Our staff is available while our Front Desk is open to help you find anything your heart desires. A truly unique, non-standardized hotel experience. ... more   less
