The rooms were the worst I have ever seen. The blankets had bug droppings on them. We removed them and still had to cover the bed with our own things and still did not feel comfortable sleeping there. The shower was stopped up in our room and water stood around our feet. There was a musty odor to the bed.... more

My wife and I stayed at The Mountaineer despite the reviews and I joined TA specifically to post our thoughts. I'm not sure what people are expecting with a rate in an outdoor tourist destination such as Asheville but at $130.00 for two nights, tax included, this was well worth it. We wanted a good jumping off point for Western... more

My first experience at the Mountaineer Inn was in September 2006. At first glance, I admit, I was a bit skeptical about staying here. I followed through with my weekend reservations. While shopping in downtown Asheville, I noticed a huge framed photograph of the Mountaineer Inn sign in a quaint shop. They also had postcards with the Mountaineer Inn sign.... more

The hotel *is* cheap BUT that doesn't account for the worn-out, dirty, old, broken-down rooms. The only retro thing that is really cool about the motel is the sign. The pool is also nice but not kept the cleanest. The "continental breakfast" was a disaster: orange juice and stale bread with no where to sit. It was located in the... more

My boyfriend and I planned to go to the Orange Peel and we definately had to eat at the Fiddlin Pig while in Asheville. The Mountaineer was 5 minutes from the Orange Peel and right across the street from the Pig. It was perfect!! We only stayed one night. We got the cheapest room with twin beds for about $50.... more

I researched the hotel online first but didn't want to commit until I saw it because of some sketchy reviews. I was extremely glad the bad reviews seemed unfounded when I got there since I'd flown all night and driven in from Charlotte and was too tired to continue looking! I stayed in the 'newer' 1974 section in a HUGE... more

Despite reading the reviews, we were hooked by the idea of supporting an independently owned motel--big mistake. The room had torn carpet, broken furniture, a circa 1964 television, filthy curtains, and to top it all off, a gaping hole in the fiberglass shower stall. This is an overpriced dump that doesn't deserve to be in business. more

The fridge. Perfectly adequate as it is, became even better and seemed to get colder after I saw the "Property of Appalachian State Rental. Private Property." Things like this display of practicality have apparently kept this inn open since 1939 and make a great place to spend a night. If you make sure you get a room with a microwave... more

We road tripped for 2 weeks with no reservations. The Mountaineer was recommended by the guidebook and, after seeing the sign, I couldn't resist. We stayed up the hill in the "newer" portion of the hotel. It was dog friendly and clean. The beds were comfy, the tv worked, and the drapes kept the room dark. :) I recommend it... more
