Just spent another exquisite evening at Spider Rock campground last week. Third, but not last visit to this sacred place. Howard Smith has it going on. Thanks for sharing your home with us!!!! You cannot beat the price, hospitality, and uniqueness of Spider Rock Campground. Remember folks, this is tent camping at its finest. It is rustic and sweet. If... more

We just had a fantastic 4 night stay at this rustic campground in our 37 foot motorhome with tow vehicle. The campground is 9.7 miles into the South Rim drive and is a way better spot to stay than the free Cottonwood Campground down near the Visitor Center. We were in spot A9 which was on the perimeter of the... more

We made a reservation several weeks in advance and Howard asked that I give him two nights DEPOSIT for the three nights reserved either by check or money order, no credit cards accepted. At that time he was very easy to get in touch with, answered the phone and emails promptly etc. A few days before we were meant to... more

We arrived at Spider Rock a couple of days after visiting Grand Canyon and hiking as far as Plateau Point. We liked Canyon de Chelley and its hosts BETTER! As we were going to be flying to Arizona with no good way to bring camp gear of any kind much less sleeping bags, we made arrangements with Howard who was... more

If you have an RV and don't require any kind of restroom or running water, this place is fine. Unfortunately, we came by car and were planning to stay in the hogan. It was dirty and creepy. A constant rain of dirt fell from walls and ceiling. There was dirt and what looked like blood on the sheets of the... more

Spider Rock is a little ways from the free campground near the visitor's center at canyon de chelly but really it is worth it. For one thing the overlook points along the way are great stops to view the canyon and take photos. When I stayed there were just a few campers and Howard had reserved me the camp site... more

I have stayed at Spider Rock Campground at least 3 times. I am returning in July, 2008. All of the above reviews are true to every degree. Howard is a delight, and I look forward to seeing him again. I hope that he will join us at our campfire, and share his stories again. As a photographer, and as one... more

We loved staying at this campsite at Canyon de Chelly. It has secluded campspots in scrub vegetation, away from the town of Chinle, and close to the beautiful and spectacular canyon. The owner Howard was very friendly and helpful, and organised a guide for us to go down into the canyon (no access unless with Navajo guide, or on White... more

If you want to experience “the real thing” - both wilderness camping and a window into Navajo culture, stay at Spider Rock campground. Spider Rock is located in a forested setting near the rim of Canyon de Chelly. A short and private trail leads visitors from the campground to an overlook a thousand feet above the canyon floor. Although the... more

If you want a taste of the traditional Navajo experience, go to the Spider Rock Campground down by the Spider Rock overlook in Canyon de Chelly. There are ample campground sites and also several hogans, which have been build by the Owner, Howard Smith. The land on which the Campground sits, has been in Howard's family for generations. He is... more
