Quiet retreat area nestled in the cool mountains. For me a return and for my spouse a first visit. The highlight was a bird watching walk with specialist guide Pak Wayan. Wayan was an amazing spotter and knew all the local birds in English. Apparently he speaks Japanese as well. Even just sitting in the restaurant with morning coffee was a bit of a bird paradise with views over the tree canopy on the slope below. Very comfortable bed, good internet and hot water. Restaurant had excellent vegetarian options. It takes a little more time to get there so so it is not a quick "drop by" place. The small village is the last before going up trails to the mountain for hiking. Try the fern tips dishes - a local treat fresh from the garden.

My wife and me spent 6 nights at this beautiful place in October 2014. Our purpose was to escape the mass tourism parts of Bali and instead spend some time in what comes closest to Bail's original rural landscape, native mountain jungles and village life.

The Bali Mountain Retreat is a very beautiful, quiet place set in lush vegetation perched on the southern slope of Batukaru volcano in west-central Bali far from the beaten tourist track. Only a narrow, partly mountainous road leads there and you need at least 2h from Ubud, 1.5h from Tabanan, and 2h from Denpasar to get there (if traffic is bad, it can be a lot more!).

The retreat itself is largely built of wood and a well-crafted blend of traditional balinese and modern style, and the entire complex is set in lush, dense vegetation - you almost feel like living in a botanical garden. In fact, the slope-setting of the place comes with awesome views towards the south and southeast, and on clear days you can see not only as far as the southern coast of Bali but also the tall volcanoes in the east. We particularly loved an open but roofed, small second-floor-tower room called the "Bird's Nest", from where you can enjoy particularly nice views over the jungle while reading a book.
The rooms are spacious and equipped with beautiful wooden furniture, and the open structure of the building guarantees a constant air flow (the lodge sits at roughly 700m above sea level, so there's no need for aircon and there are also very few mosquitos!). Be aware that ants are everywhere, but that's to be expected in a place like this, so don't leave open food in your room. I should have liked a bit more light in the bathroom, it's a bit dark for shaving...:-)

During our stay, the in-room wifi did not work, but we were told that it normally does. However, there was free wifi in the restaurant area, though obviously not at the high velocities one is used from home.

The lodge has a restaurant with delicious food, though the portions might be a bit small when you come back from a long hiking trip with a wolf's hunger...they also offer the usual spa program including massages, reflexology, facials etc., which (according to my wife) was very high class.
They have some clothes (dresses, T-Shirts, panties) and really beautiful silver jewelery on sale, and at prices about two thirds of what you would pay for similar stuff let's say at the tourist shops at Pura Tanah Lot Temple in southern Bali.

Directly from the doorstep of the lodge, you can set out for hiking and trekking trips through jungle, ricefields and up the slope of Batukaru volcano (including a 2h trek to a small, very seldom visited temple up the slope), which will keep you busy at least 3 days until you'd need a driver to get you to more distant places.

And now to the staff:
I can't say enough positive about the staff at Bali Mountain Retreat. All of them are very, very friendly and while not everybody speaks perfect English, they always try to make you as comfortable as possible and are also very flexible with individual arrangements, be it concerning the food or anything else. The couple who run the lodge, Rani and Richard, are a great source of information and Richard would also come and sit at your dining table for some very interesting conversation, or take the guitar and play some Beatles or Bob Dylan songs on Saturday evening...

We had an emergency situation during our stay that required immediate transport to the next hospital in Tabanan, and without us asking for it, Rani and one of her employees naturally accompanied us to help us with the communication with hospital staff etc. We were very, very grateful for that help and the very friendly and caring support they gave us in this difficult situation!

If we go to Bali again, we'll most certainly lodge again at Bali Mountain Retreat!

Stayed in the Vishnu & Superior Teak room for 3 nights with 6 pax.

Pros:
Great weather, very cooling
Friendly staffs and drivers.
Love the rice fields track, excellence view and not touristy.

Cons:
Approximately 1hr + car ride to the nearest town
Limited food selection in the resort restaurant.
Not much activity to do after the trekking, suggest to bring some books / games along.

Overall: I will visit the resort again for a relaxing trip.

Bali Mountain Retreat is one of those places that you suddenly see yourself comparing every other place to after visiting! We started our holiday in Kuta, and the retreat was our second stop. The sheer love for the land that the guides and the hosts have is obvious right from the hotel pickup.

This is almost the friendliest place on the Island one is likely to visit. The guides are genuine and warm, they love what they do, and are eager to share local trivia. The retreat staff are lovely people - they smile because they want to, and how comfortable you are really matters to them. The owner Richard, who built the resort over a period of 4 years, is well travelled - and has many stories to share over a meal at the community style eating area. We had some insightful conversations with the guests at the retreat, made a few new friends, and really got to unwind, reach inside, and wipe all of the commercial Bali away.

A few words to describe the rooms: spotless, tasteful, comfortable, clean, stylish. We stayed at the Krishna cottage. The way the booking was handled was efficient, the ease with which we could plan our stay sitting all the way in Dubai was surprising, and having our expectations exceeded when we arrived was deeply satisfying.

We signed up for the 6 hour jungle walk that starts with a trek up the mountainside and ends through lush paddy fields. There is something about walking through those forests that gets you very calm on the inside, a sort of comfort to be had knowing that most of the plantlife around you has been there for over 400 years.

I promised myself that I'd write a review a few weeks after getting back home - just to give a more balanced opinion and not just scribble "take my money now!", so there.

Located in the foot hills of Bali’s second highest mountain “BatuKaru” (height around 2,200m), Bali Mountain Retreat offers a pleasant respite from the pollution and traffic of Kuta. The resort altitude at approximately 700m means it enjoys a sublime cooler climate than Bali’s coastal towns with day temperatures in the mid-high twenties and night time temperatures around 15-20 degrees celsius. The resort is off older style with an eclectic arrangement of traditional bungalows within the compound; bungalow designs even include some Joglo structures all the way from Java.
As we turned up unannounced and the retreat was not busy we had the choice of rooms and choose a superior room located in a central two story “Teak House” complex which also houses the Yogo Shala on the top floor.
The room was comfortable and featured a huge kingsize bed surround by large mosquito net. There was a spare day bed and small ensuite which was rustic but functional. Being in rural Bali you will enjoy sharing the area with a range of birds, lizards, geckos and insects, none of which is anything to worry about. But if you are use to sterile five star high rise accommodation in the smog, this place is not for you.
We took all our meals at the resort (there are several other options nearby but relatively limited) and the food was exceedingly good. There is a range of Balinese specialities on the menu plus some regular Indonesian favourites but I strongly recommend the local specialties.
We were lucky one of the owners Anita was present and we enjoyed dining with her. As an anthropologist, her insights into Balinese life were fascinating.
We took a trek with manager Putu who is also a local farmer. As we past through the many gardens in the area his commentary proved very insightful into local traditional life. All the locals we passed with extremely polite and friendly. We were also impressed how clean the local area was with very little rubbish to detract from the lush rainforest views.
I understand a number of guests come for yoga retreats and certainly the yoga room had impressive views of the local area and even as far as Gunung Agung when the skies where clear.
Very happy to commend this retreat. 5 stars
Thumbs up below if you appreciated this review.

WARNING: This accomodation is rated BBB. It has an extraordinary botanical content. Garden enthusiasts will find it very difficult to leave. All guests will find it relaxing to the point of immobility. Visitor discretion is advised!

If you are looking for an off-the-beaten-track place to stay in central Bali without aircon and the accompanying big-hotel feel, I can’t recommend Bali Mountain Retreat more highly.

It is like a miniature Balinese village but without its own temple. The villas are simple but lovely. The gardens are wonderful. The food is excellent (there are even cooking classes). Best of all, the small number of staff make you feel as though you are staying with friends rather than as guests. My friend even got to help with the cooking and cooked dinner for the staff!

35 years ago I backpacked my way through Indonesia. This beautiful place provides those of us who want a similar experience without all the mosquitos, ants, mandis, endless vegetable-free nasi goreng, dodgy chicken and other discomforts. We climbed Gunung Batukaru (2,275m), we’re invited to attend the annual full moon ceremony in a nearby village (the only outsiders present), saw the village children give a dance performance for their parents to gamelan music played by their fathers, had the best massage ever (which I sorely needed after G. Batukaru!), and totally chilled out.

I often say I’ll go back to places I’ve enjoyed staying at, but rarely do. Somehow I feel I will return in this case as, surrounded by the luxury, faux authenticity, fixed smiles and impersonality of my current up-market hotel in Ubud, I miss the simplicity, homeliness and genuine friendliness of the Bali Mountain Retreat already.

Thank you Putu and friends. I will see you again.

Paul

I stayed a few nights alone at the BMR and enjoyed the peacefulness of the location. It is great to go as group, family, couple escape or as a solo traveler. As solo female, I felt very well taken care of and very safe. The BMR is set near a rural village in the west side of Bali in mountain rainforest. Go on the guided hikes and ask questions. I enjoyed the rainforest and rice field walk (mountain summit not possible during rainy season). The guide was very knowledgeable about the local forest. I particularly valued his passion for the wildlife and knowledge of local birds. The location has a yoga studio for self-practice (if not hosting a yoga retreat) or at times offering a yoga package when an instructor is on sight. Bring novels and leave behind the ones you finish. Good healthy food options using a system to order in advance. I slept so well here. Good internet connection to help me set up the next part of the trip.

We are currently in our third day at the retreat and have loved our stay so much that we couldn't wait to review it. To get to the retreat we were picked up from ubud by a driver, arranged through here, who took us to pura luhur batukaru, a gorgeous temple in the area, a short walk via rice paddies as well as to a coffee and cocoa plantation, all for a very reasonable price.
When we arrived at the remote retreat we were slightly concerned that being carless, we'd be stuck at the hotel and forced to eat our meals only here. We were thrilled to discover that the restaurant here serves absolutely fantastic Indonesian food (the sweet pork and red curry are our favorites) and the price for the food is not too expensive.
The resort itself is located in the foothills of mount batukaru with breathtaking views of the jungle and the feeling of the place is simply idyllic.
We took two treks offered by the resort- the first was a four hour walk to the rice paddies. Along the walk our kind and knowledgeable guide (Gudey- clearly misspelling here) talked to us about all the plants and birds we saw and gave us a ton of fruit to try along the way as well including: passion fruit, snake skin fruit, cacao and candlenut. We saw vanilla, smelled fresh clove leaves and saw coffee trees. After tasting the jungle we arrived at a small stream between two rice fields where we sat for 30 min to 1 hour enjoying the peace and quiet, the view and the cool water.
The second trek we took was the challenging but incredibly rewarding climb up mount batukaru. If you are up for a 3-4 hour climb up a steep jungle and another 3-4 hours down (or longer depending on fitness level) this is a must! The rainforest is simply an amazing experience and at the top we were rewarded with views of mount agung and merapi peaking through the clouds.
The resort also offers massages, which we hear are fantastic and cooking classes.
If you want to disconnect from the world while eating great food and having the opportunity to do a lot of amazing hiking or simply relaxing, this place is a must!

We stayed here to do some trekking and as a base to explore the region. With hindsight this wasn't a good idea for 2 reasons - firstly the weather stopped us from doing the trek we wanted (OK, not much you can do about that), secondly its location is super isolated, really far from any sights/attractions and the roads are terrible and this made the day trips a little tiresome. There's not much else to do there, but then it's called a Retreat, I suppose the clue is in the name.

The resort itself is nice, our room was spacious but felt a little musty, the place had a rustic feel rather than luxury as we had read on some other reviews, but certainly wasn't bad. The food was very good - especially the breakfast pancakes! The staff were all very friendly and try to be helpful. Overall, I personally wouldn't go back here again, I would stay somewhere more accessible and less basic. However, if you are looking to get away from it all, disappear up into the mountains for a few days and relax, then it's probably the place for you.

If you like staying like in the midst of a jungle, don’t mind going to the bathroom with slugs on the wall, in the sink, and on your toothbrush, and spiders on your doors, and tree frogs jumping into your room, then this place is not too bad for guesthouse or lodge in the mountains. My hubby told me a slug was stuck to my toothbrush and he had to get it off and wash my toothbrush with soap. The toilet is filled with slugs in the evening.
Many of the reviews we read said the food here was great. But Indonesian food is not new to us and the food here is certainly quite average; very village home-cooked style. The portions were very small and we all felt hungry even after our first dinner. The meals with chicken only had very few slices; perhaps good if here for a diet.
It takes about 35min to drive up the only road that leads to the retreat. It took 2h to drive here from the airport, and 2h to drive to lovina beach on the north of Bali. The road that came up the mountain was quite broken, especially the last part leading to the retreat. Not so good a location if considering to tour around Bali. I guess people come up to stay up in the mountains.
We did a trek to the rice fields on our own, and there were many fierce dogs that we had to pass by. Not to mention the road is really not easy to walk on. The villagers are nice and always smiling though.
The retreat showed pictures of mountain view but we couldn't see it for the three days we were here.

The retreat is open to families if there is not an organised "adult retreat" using up al the accomodation at the time you wish to visit . The staff are super friendly and it would provide a great opportunity you all to explore the authentic local Balinese culture.
