The title says it all. The place is not clean, the staff was not discourteous, but they weren't super helpful either. Also, the computers aren't free (contrary to what one reviewer below says) and the WiFi didn't work for me. The downtown location is nice, but not if insects are draining your blood at night. When I searched on the internet, the pictures associated with this hostel seemed great. However, they are grossly misleading. This hostel was always dark - the lights were continually being switched off, shady clientele, dirty dirty dirty bathrooms, no locks on the bathroom doors, small lockers, outside doors only locked part of the time. Great location in downtown Anchorage. Walk everywhere. One block to metro. Good home base. Helpful staff, especially Peter. Two free computers for guests to use. Clean facilities. Comfortable beds and crisp,clean linens. Good experience. more

This is a great place, but I will add at least one caution so that I'm not overly biased on AIH's behalf. You'll be sharing a space with others, some very unique and interesting people. This hostel is no longer affiliated with Hostelling International. Their cleanliness has gone way down hill, and the whole place is basically falling apart. No doors have a lock... not the dorm rooms, not the hallways, not even the toilets! When the hostel is open, people can come and go as they wish -- even non hostel guests. Avoid this... more
