Unplanned stop on the way to Nelson; Murchison held little promise but hope springs from the most unexpected of places. Welcoming staff and a beautiful room with warm colours, wicked electric blankets, and wonderful furnishings. The kitchen was full of cow-character, the dining room covered in cow drawings and the lounge offering more puzzles than any mind could truly comprehend.... More

This was my favourite hostel out of all we stayed at in NZ. The bathrooms were not brand new but they were conveniently situated and clean. We liked the room, kitchen, living room and the terrace very much. The atmospehere was family and friendly and the place felt very cosy. We bought eggs from for breakfast that were just collected... A comfortable stay for my husband and daughter and I. Clean. Well equipped kitchen. Restaurant onsite if desired or 2 others within walking distance. As Hostel stays go, this was a good one. Would recommend and stay again.

I'd be tempted to say this place was like a home away from home, but in fact it was more like returning home, or at least staying with a close friend or relative! The hostel was very cozy with a friendly and laidback atmosphere. With a fire burning in the common area, and electric blankets (though I didn't need to... More

Specially if you go at the wintertime, is perfect, warm, and every beds have electric blanket. The owners are the most kindly people. Clean, tidy and comfortable, you also can watch movies and eat great caked hand made.

We ended up at the Lazy Cow after the pass was closed and - in the freezing weather - decided to splash out on a room instead of another night in the campervan. It was only $74 for a double, which was a steal. The place was warm and welcoming, with a wood burner and a huge selection of DVDs,... More

This place was amazing. We stayed by accident as we thought Murchison was where the Nelson Lakes originated from, but fell in love with the Lazy Cow. Great hospitality. Cake on arrival (well needed after a long day of driving), and a great home cooked meal (we had the cow Pie, which I highly recommend)! Good log fire and electric... More

We stayed here for just one night (sadly) to break up the drive from Abel Tasman down to Franz Josef Glacier. This was our favourite accommodation in our whole month's trip in NZ. Makes a great stop over, whether you are staying in the area or just breaking up the drive. Rooms are very clean, tidy and extremely cosy with... More
