We called for dinner recently at this quaint old village hostelry . It was charming and the staff were pleasant and helpful. We sat in the dining room which apart from us was empty, although it was only early evening. Dinner was a battered fish platter to share for starters and it was excellent but my fillet steak presented as tournedos... More

A charming, 16th century inn with the appearance of being half timbered. Atmospheric, flagstoned bar area and lovely log fire. Some decent beers and bar food is fine. Hotel rooms are within the main building, up a thickly carpeted staircase and corridor (which masks any creaks from the old floor timbers). My room was pleasant, with a tiny ensuite shower... More

I visited this inn for two nights in February as a base for visiting nearby friends. The restaurant food both at dinner (vegetable lasagne) and at breakfast (fried eggs and bacon) was excellent, and the staff and host were charming and friendly. Unfortunately, though my room (7) was quiet and warm, the decor was tired and the bed itself was... More

Visited the George on our way to Devon and sampled the Sunday lunch. Soup was home made and excellent and Roast loin of pork was very good (crackling had a good crackle). The dining room at the back is spacious and the food is complemented by a good range of well kept beers and ciders. Service was ok (nearly slow... More

For paying £70 we expected more from our room. But the bed was old and not comfortable, the room was dark and it took a few minutes until the shower water got warm. The staff, however, was extremely happy to help and nice. So they did manage to compensate for the dodgy room with some personal warmth... The breakfast was... More

We stopped at The George Inn after a long day at Long Leat. With our 17month old son in tow we were dubious about staying in a hotel, as anyone with young children will understand. However, the owners and staff were more than accommodating to our and our sons needs, the room was spacious enough to house our travel cot... More

Driving to the West country down the A303, I dropped in without a booking and stayed the night. I was met by very welcoming and friendly staff who quickly checked me in and offered me a bottle of wine and dinner. The menu was enticing and I ended up having three courses which were all cooked well, tasty and of... More

Really enjoyed our stay in this quirky pub in lovely Wiltshire village. Room was large and very quiet. Very clean with good linen and towels. Free Wifi, though only works downstairs as building is very old and walls are very thick. Dinner was good with fresh local ingredients. Breakfast was fantastic! Great value for money.

Of course, the building is an old one and the sloping floors etc. add to its charm, but carpets and light fitments need replacing, and redecoration and new curtains would vastly improve the rooms. Clean and comfortable bed, however, and good breakfast.
