Vinales is one of the highlights of Cuba and staying at The Big House, a lovely casa in particular, made this part of our holiday all the more rewarding.

The host, Arturo, couldn't have made us more welcome - and if your Spanish is as bad as mine you'll be delighted that he speaks great English (something we, not surprisingly, found rare).

Not only is he (and his mates) a lot of fun, but you'll be able to really get to know a member of the local community. The food is delicious whether it's the typically Cuban breakfast through to homemade crisps and an expansive tasty supper of meat, fish, veg, salad and of course rice and beans (these were amongst the best we had).

And the fridge is always well stocked with beer and water. Arturo will be able to pre-book many of the local activities the lovely Vinales valley offers - hiking, horse riding, trips to stunning beaches.
