We had a pleasant stay at the Chateau Tongariro. It should be understood by folks planning to stay there that they are not going to a modern hotel with the latest amenities. Rather, the Chateau has charm from a bygone day. It was a first-class hotel when it was built and remains true to that original concept. When you enter... More

I stayed at the Chateau 2x 2 days apart. I hiked the Tongarario Northern Circuit in between my 2 stays. The Chateau stored my luggage while I was on the trek. The staff is incredibly friendly and accomodating. Upon my return for the more expensive room at 220 NZ$/day, I was not happy with the 1st room's view, so they... More

we stayed here for an intimate family wedding. There were some good parts and bad but overall it was a lovely stay. we had a room in the new wing. meh... it was decidedly average, had bit of a musty odour about it so we threw open the windows to get the smell out... (how lovely is it though to... More

Thank you for your comments about your recent stay at Chateau Tongariro. Our housekeeper thanks you for your comments with regards to cleanliness of the room. They do work hard at keeping the rooms clean. We are constantly working on the hotel and we have been through several stages of refurbishment. Currently we are working on our original wing of... I participated in the Tussock Challenge, and stayed over at the Chateau. The stay lived up to our expectations, but the service in the Pihanga Cafe was extremely poor, and we left without getting what we went in for. Unfortunately this soured our experience at the Chateau More

Thank you for your comments with regards to service. I have discussed this with the staff and management concerned and do apologise for any service short comings. We do endeavour to provide the best possible service and it seems that it was extremely busy in the cafe over that weekend. Please feel free to contact me via our web page... More

This is a place to experience for its old world, Agatha Christie charm. It's fun for a night or two. Get a package deal (breakfast and dinner included) as the restaurant is very expensive otherwise. The "set-menu", package deal dinner has lots of choice and is excellent. More

The Chateau was built in the early 20th century as a grand hotel. Today, it retains much of the grandeur, but also hosts lots of hikers, families, etc. A git of the grandeur may have faded, but the rooms are quite nice, the public areas are impressive, and there are lots of services. There is a fairly minimal fitness center,... More

They offer cabins to stay in behind the hotel, which are 1/4 the price of the hotel rooms, but still have full access to all the hotel amenities. The cabins were nice but the beds were miserable. Having said that, I would stay there again given the opportunity. More
