We stayed here for 2 nights as part of our 10 day Cape Town and area visit as we wanted a game reserve, but not a ‘manufactured’ one. This place is perfect with 60000 hectares where they treat conservation seriously. The hotel offers 2 game drives daily, one to the North in the morning which requires an additional conservation fee to be paid and one in the afternoon to the South which is included. Our tours were all hosted by Romeo who knew the reserve inside out and made each of them a wonderful experience. All of the drives were different and we saw different animals each day. Over the 4 drives we saw Zebra, Elephants , Giraffes, Rhinos, Buffalo, Ostrich, Kudu, Sprinbok, countless Antelopes, Jackals and loads of birds. We missed out on the Lions, Cheetahs and Leopards but that wasn’t a problem as the overall experience more than coped. Gerri and her team were also great and our rooms were large and comfortable with great views of the flawless night time sky. There are only 4 rooms and meals are taken together around a table for 8 which adds to the experience. If you are an antisocial person this might be a problem for you but we enjoyed sharing our stories and experiences with the other guests before a bit of star gazing over a wine. The food was plentiful and tasty and we were offered all the drinks we needed as well. A sundowner gin and tonic watching sunset on the evening drives was typical. Overall a fantastic stay and our thanks to Gerri, Romeo and the who,e team who made our stay so special. The food was…

The White Lion Safari Lodge was spectacular! There were six of us and we were all so impressed from the moment we arrived. The place is beautiful, as is each suite. The highlights were the three safari rides with Romeo as our guide. He has such rich knowledge and respect for the animals. We were blown away with what we saw. We could not have had a better guide. In between rides, we were treated to amazing meals by Alisha, and drinks and anything else we needed were provided by Gerry, Abby and Megan. This is truly a 5 star experience.

I can’t say enough great things about the White Lion. The lodge was impeccable and beautifully appointed, the staff were welcoming and friendly and went out of their way to make our trip perfect. Our guide Romeo, had a special connection to the land and the animals and our safari experience was beyond our expectations. Close encounters with elephants, lions, cheetahs giraffes, etc…. His professionalism shone through and his wonderful sense of humour made each outing fun exciting. If you are looking for boutique safari experience. This is the place !

Worth every penny - from the delicious meals, fabulous rooms, luxurious hot tub and pool, and especially the incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff who went above and beyond. We especially enjoyed a glass of champagne as the sun was setting on the afternoon drive!

Wow. Where to start! Lodging comfort and services plus plus plus! The staff is beyond what you imagine. We (6 gay men.... I was worried coming here without knowing if we would be accepted/comfortable here) had an awesome stay. This is South Africa as Gerry remind Tim and I, most places do not need to announce whether they comfortable or not, everyone is welcome! This country is open minded and we did not feel it was an issue. Gerry is a wonderful host. She took a lot of time to speak with our group and was knowledgeable of the park and local info. She has a great wine knowledge and guided us for our adventure to come in wine country, with some suggestions. Everything was awesome. Romeo our guide was s000000o amazing and professional. We learned so much and his passion for the creatures that make up this reserve is evendent. He even stopped to pick up a small turtle which blocked the road and moved it gently to the path. He made sure the two full morning we chose for our runs would be perfect to capture the most we could imagine. We even gat to have close encounters with the elephants and cheetahs. Each visit is what it is and you have to accept what you get. We really lucked out and he is an excellent tracker. Riding a safari jeep is rough expect it and do not complain ...please. The front seats are more comfortable but the back ones are a fun ride. Try to switch it up. Drives to the north you see more animals. Staff food and drinks are beyond what we had expected. This place is really great. Gourmet meals and awesome cocktails and wines. Beautiful plating, the food was art and everything was cooked and seasoned perfectly. One in our group has picky eating issues and the staff made special plates for him. You will love it all. We could have enjoys another night. Be generous with your tipping they work hard and deserve it. Loved the experience. Look no further this is an awesome safari experience. I did Kruger park in the past, but this was better first, because of location close to Capetown but more because of the animals, the vast terrain, the passion of the staff and for what is Being created here. Come support them and the Sanbona.…

The food was not up to standard and always cold. The travel to see the big game was very long and the roads where very bumby. The lodge is super nice and staff are very good and helpful. Only complaint was the food.

If you are looking for something special, secluded, that includes an abundance of nature and animals, this is your place - if you can get in. And you get to be part of something bigger than yourself: help conservation efforts. We were truely impressed with this successfull project for which one has to have a long breath. Well done people of Sanbona, we thank you.

Accommodation was delightful with attention to detail. Food for breakfast and dinner was excellent – if only just enough for lunch. One lunch we “dared” to ask for seconds - upon which an assortment of fingerfood was hastily prepared from the deepfreezer. We know the Karoo is a different setting for gamedrives altogether - However, the guide Romeo made the drives all around unpleasant. On the first game drive he greeted us with “we’ll probably wont see much but we’ll try”. Well. We saw one hippo. Some antilope in the distance, a baboon. He seemed listless and bothered. No information was volunteered – only when prompted did he share information about the karoo and its individuality. The game drives weren’t fun at all. The group taking advantage of the drive in the morning spent 7 hours on the vehicle. En route to the northern part of the reserve they were told that the white lions (!) had been killed a few weeks prior – so there weren’t any lions in the reserve currently. A brief information beforehand would have been appreciated. After the lengthy drive in the morning he clearly did not feel like taking the other guests out on the afternoon game drive. He was even more subdued than the previous day. Again had to be prompted to divulge more information about the area, its animals and flora/fauna. When stopping for a sundowner the ordered Gin and Tonic came without the tonic. As only one beer and one coke had been packed for the other couple – no drinks were available. All in all – a beautiful setting – nice accommodation – good food – lousy game drives. …
