We stopped in Ax as we drove from Carcassone to Barcelona over the Pyrenees The drive is highly recommended and beautiful. There aren't many towns enroute and Ax won by default. The town is worn and needs updating. Not a place to savor. We went to a new thermal spa that just opened in town and had massages and soaks in the many pools. A fun afternoon. We went to the tourist office to ask for a good place to stay. After a few phone calls ( it was early May and some hotels were closed) we went to Auberge Orry Le Saquet, about 5 km out of town on the road to Andorra. The room was clean and adequate and the husband and wife team running the place were very helpful. I believe the price for half board was about 115 euro.
We had a delightful dinner prepared by the owners in an open kitchen off the dining room. Breakfast was standard but adequate and we left the next morning for Barcelona. more
