My partner and I recently returned from a 9 day surprise anniversary trip to New Zealand, during which we stayed 2 nights at the Wharekauhau Lodge. (We had already stayed 1 night at the Westin Auckland and 3 nights at the Spire in Queenstown, and continued onto the Greenhill Lodge in Hawke's Bay/Hastings for our last 2 nights). We often... more

Took my husband here for a birthday lunch. We thought the price represented great value for money considering the quality of the establishment. The staff really looked after us and we had our own private dining room overlooking the ocean, with a lounge area where we could rest between courses - fabulous! Fantastic wine list, food, service and attention to... more

I am writing this review many years after I stayed here, because I have now travelled to many beautfiul 5 star hotels through Europe, NZ, Australia and Asia only to realise that nothing ever comes close to how spectacular Wharekauhau was. I don't think there is much need to go into detail- it is all very simple to describe- perfection.... more

It really is the most sublime place: situated in an understated yet truly beautiful bay, the main part of the lodge is quietly amazing, and the cottages are to die for. The food is exquisite,... more

Our stay was great and our high expectations were met. We didn't experience some of the lowlights mentioned in one of the reviews so far. Either they have changed for the better or that guest must have had a one-off bad stay. Not us, it was great and we recommend it. Sure it was expensive, but you know that before... more

I will start this out by saying this is a very expensive lodge- over 1600NZ dollars a night (1100 USD with taxes). While the lodge and facilities are beautiful and the setting is absolutely lovely, the service was sorely lacking in this price range. We often feel that it is the little things that add up and there were very... more

If you have the money to spend and want a truly excellent lodge experience, then stay here on your next trip to NZ. Cant say enough about the staff, the accomodation, the activities, the sheer beauty of the location, and the food. Wharekauhau, there is no substitute.... more
