My wife and I just got back from two weeks touring Northern Portugal and stopped here for one night based on the write up in Karen Brown's. It turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. The Solar is beautiful, located in an old small village on the periphery of the Dao wine valley. We were greeted immediately by Senhora Abreu Madeira herself (note, she speaks very little English but is pretty fluent in French and Spanish if you don't speak Portuguese). We were tired and hot from the 5+ hour drive we had just taken and were dieing to hit the pool. Senhora quickly showed us our room and then brought us out to the Solar's terrace to show us the pool. We quickly ran back inside to get our suits on and when we came back outside, there was a picnic basket with multiple different locally grown nuts and some crackers and then the Senhora brought us out a bottle of her own home grown wine and set up a table for us next to the lounge chairs by the pool.
