If you are planning a trip to the Chiemsee area, the Alter Wirt (and Bernau) is the perfect place to stay. Bernau is close to the Autobahn and Lake Chiemsee, so you don't have to worry about getting lost. We had some of the best food on our two-week trip at the restaurant, which has a small biergarten on the side. It's not as fancy (or pricey) as the neighboring Hotel Bonnschloss, but the staff are friendly, the rooms are large and clean, and the inn is charming. It is easy to make reservations using their website (and you don't need to speak German).

Prien is a short drive, and it's easy to find the boat dock if you want to visit Herrenchiemsee and Fraueninsel (I think I spelled those correctly). If you go early (9:00 AM or so) you have plenty of time to visit both islands, and you get a good parking spot. Fraueninsel has several restaurants to chose from, and very fresh fish.
