Bowes is a lovely village, very peaceful, The Pub, is very cosy and the food is excellent but a little expensive,
Breakfast is an extra £7.50 per person, which makes an good value stay, a more expensive one.
The Room was cosy and had everything that was required, but the Bed was the most uncomfortable I have ever stayed in, and This is quite a few!
It was a metal bed frame with a thin mattress, I woke up with backache...... more

The Ancient Unicorn is a historic coaching inn located on the main street of the fascinating north Pennine village of Bowes. Once it was a half-way house along the transpennine A66 but now by-passed, it is a quiet and charming stopover for hill walkers and cyclists as well as motorists. Landlady Joanne Foster and bar manager Les provided us with warm and friendly hospitality. With low beams and a roaring fire, there is a very cosy atmosphere, complemented by home-cooked food and a good selection of real ales. more
