As in life, when visitng Iruya , the journey is much more beautiful than the destination itself. The road (offroad, "ripio" and passing rivers without bridges) is absolutely wonderful. The first half it goes up until 4200 meters over the sea level and it goes down again until you finnaly reach Iruya. Then town itself was a little bit disapointing... More

You will be almost at the top of the mountain, in front of condor´s nest, magnificent sight, down the little town, the ancient church and the river...Is not easy to reach this little village that it seams to be hanging from the mountain, almost 3 hours by a winding road, you will reach 4000 mts before going down till the... Iruya is a wonderful place to visit and as others have said unless you're a backpacker this is the only place in town. And it's fine. Rooms decent, public spaces well designed, food ok, customer service also decent (eg they started breakfast 30 mins early as we had an early morning horse ride). All that said it's very unlikely to... More

The route to Iruya is beautiful and the road is not so bad. It took us 2,5 hours to reach Iruya with many stops for photos. The hotel is very nice on the top of the village. It has a nice atmosphere due to the elegant and modern decoration and furniture, which help to cover his age and also the... More

Hotel Iruya is perched atop the village at the end of an extremely steep cobblestone road. The only thing further along the road is the cemetery. There's no English here. Perhaps you'll have some difficulty communicating - sign language works. Regional dialects are strong so high school Spanish is of little help. However you will be so relieved to have... More

Getting there is an adventure in itself, but then you step inside this hotel and you're happy to find a beautiful room, amazing views, comfortable chairs in the living room, helpful staff. Maybe just for one night, but so happy to be there!!

Iruya is located on a steep slope - there are very few lodging possibilities in Iruya - you either stay at a very humble lodge with shared bathroom, or go to Hosteria de Iruya. The Hosteria is located on the upper side of Iruya - it is nicely decorated with local handcrafts - we visited the hotel at low season... More

This comfortable lodge is perched overlooking a valley at an elevation of 9,120 feet. The charming adobe and stone village is peopled by Mestizos and local Coya who maintain their ancient traditions. To get here you cross the Abra Condor pass at 13,123 feet. The food is hearty and plentiful. It is worth the effort to visit.
