We are from Melbourne and we found the coral reefs to be snorkelling paradise. We swam, snorkelled, kayaked and went on many walks. We have now swum with turtles which was really special. The late afternoon boat tour of the island with Geoff was a real highlight. Thanks again Geoff and all the workers for making our holiday really special.   "Great Keppel Island is a peaceful, bushy island retreat living in the shadow of the old and decaying resort. Obviously the island has seen more prosperous days and its hard to see the resort ever opening again despite the plans - for better or worse. There is a restaurant/bar at the northern end..." of the main beach which we did not eat at but has an envious beach aspect. There are no food shops available (only very basic staples) so you need to bring all your own food. There are great kitchen facilities available though at both the house or the main part of the resort. The beaches here are truly excellent with fine white sand and clear clear water. And with a small effort you can find a whole beach to yourself. We stayed in the larger house which is set apart from the rest of the village at the southern end of the beach. It has never been a huge tourist island, which is a major attraction for those turned off by glitzty resort islands.
