Although smallish, this inn is cosy, clean and practical. They even have a heater lamp in the bathroom, which saved me from the cold on the first late night we arrived, giving me a chance to still enjoy a lovely shower, after a long day. For those who need to stay in touch with the world, it has free wifi connection as well as English programs on flat screen TVs, in the room, breakfast and lounge areas.   "I stayed here for three nights earlier this May at the recommendation of my hostel in Chengdu and really loved it. I was traveling alone and got a double bed with ensuite bathroom, and while a cozy size, it was clean and very comfortable, even on the cold nights (120-ish quai per night). I stayed at..." the #1 house, where Mama Naxi and her husband ran the show. They old-style courtyard home felt classic, and the staff was very helpful in terms of making arrangements for local trips and onward travel (even lending me a little backpack for a day hike). The hostel attracted an international crowd, and I enjoyed chatting with other travelers over tea in the main room and over the delicious and very reasonably priced (25 quai) family dinner. Mama Naxi is a real character, and while quite vociferous (Rough Guide called her "overbearing"), I actually thought she was quite kind but full of bluster.   "This hotel has a very interesting set up as mentioned by previous reviewers. I have stayed in many hotels but this is surely a unique one. Our tour group stayed here for two nights and I must say it was the best hotel on this trip. We were assigned to the room with a balcony on the 2nd floor. True, ..."the extra roll-away bed was really low and squeaky but the room itself was decent. Breakfast prepared by the housekeeper was just amazing, too much food, really. Son said the warm milk served each night was the best that he had. Unfortunately we cannot tolerate milk product and missed out on that. The whole hotel compound was well-designed, worth your time to walk around and enjoy the quaint settings. It seems like some villas are occupied by individuals. I wouldn't mind living here long term or as vacation home. We were told that these villas were selling for less than USD $80,000.00 seven years ago, and of course they are worth much much more now.
