  "Very nice hotel in a beautiful location. the somewhat unassuming approach to the hotel blends in beautifully with the minimalist development of the island. Hotel is clean and comfy and the staff were very friendly. The outdoor firepit on the back patio is cool, but the short walk on the elevated ..."boardwalk, thru the woods, and then down on the beach, steals the show. We especially enjoyed the hotel bike rentals and used those to see the area. Although we stopped here last minute, en-route to Florida, we're planning a return visit for a longer stay. Check out the Georgia Sea Turtle Center while you're there. You can see it in an hour or spend several if you want to walk the nature trails. " More >

The fact that the subsequent owners of the Jekyll Island Club had the good taste to preserve its refined elegance is also fabulous. What can I say? I think the Jekyll Island Club is ..."wonderful from any perspective. I should however say, in the interest of full disclosure, that the Southeast is one of my favorite areas and the fin-de-siecle is one of my favorite historical periods. I also love preserved, beautiful buildings, so consider the source here. That being said, the location of the Jekyll Island Club is great: an easy hour's drive from Jacksonville and only a short bike ride--the island's only 1.5 miles wide--from the uncrowed ocean-side beaches. The local restaurants are also nice for a change of pace: sit outside by the salt marsh with a beer at sunset or have some shrimp and grits at a good local place. The hotel itself is extraodinary.
