Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What a fabulous, fabulous place with an incredible team working there. To be fair not everything about our evening was perfect but the way the issues were handled was above and beyond. A shout out first to Joey our server who identified the problem really...before we did and took the initiative to resolve it before it became one. Absolutely first class. Secondly to Ashley (sp?) the manager who came over to check that Joey had handled it all well, she needn't have as Joey was excellent but the fact she did was appreciated. Top job. To top it all off the food was fantastic and well worth the wait (We did not have a dinner reservation and had to wait a little for our meal in the bar area). Of course the venue is amazing too and as bizarre as it sounds the period gentlemen's facilities are worth a visit in their own right, epic.More

Dined here yesterday evening prior to a show at the Philharmonic Hall. Booked online as reviews seemed generally good. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. On entering the pub/restaurant, the atmosphere seemed very much a drinkers pub, very dark and not particularly pleasant - gave us Wetherspoons...vibes other than the building itself is clearly old and ornate. The bar staff were welcoming however and sent us upstairs to the restaurant. The dining room is just a large room with a bar in the corner, plastic flowers on the table - not what we'd anticipated, which was a shame. We ordered a sharing starter between us, then a chicken pie and burger for main course. The pie was supposed to be served with cornish clotted cream mash and thyme roasted carrots. I'm no chef, but the mash seemed like it had been microwaved, as it was in an oval shape and tasted like ones from the supermarket. I'd hope this wasn't the case, but it certainly wasn't what I was expecting. The carrots, consisted of 1/2 a carrot, cut in 1/2, were practically cold and dry, as if they'd been cooked earlier and left under a hot lamp. On the plus side the pie was really tasty and hot. My Husbands burger was what it said on the tin - nothing special, but ok. Needless to say we didn't bother ordering puddings. It's a shame, as I'm sure with some tlc the building could be beautiful and so much more could be made of the dining room. Staff wise, the bar man was really friendly, with a big smile. The waiter and waitress didn't engage with the customers and didn't seem to want to be there. Overall, we were fed and it was in an ideal location for the Philharmonic Hall - right across the road, but wouldn't go back.More

We were at the dining rooms for dinner prior to a concert across the road at the Philharmonic. Nice greeting and when we sat down we were about the third table to be seated. Drinks order was taken and drinks delivered quickly. Meal order was...taken and all was pleasant. However it then took an hour and 20 mins to bring the meals. The waiter did come twice to apologise for the wait, apparently the orders had got mixed up. We waited whilst all the other tables filled up (about 17 of them) and most of them ordered after us but got their meals before us. They did take the cost of our drinks off as recompense but it was pretty poor. When the food came my nicholsons burger was only average, cheese sauce was a cheese slice and had clearly been under a warmer for a while as the fries were only lukewarm and the bun was crispy. The other three members of my party all said their food was good - two had pis and one had the bangers and mash. I certainly won’t be going againMore

Very disappointing. First the good point - there were four of us and two meals were fine; mine however was cold and tasteless. We booked a table for dinner before seeing Jonathon Pie at the Philharmonic and we were so disappointed. The place needs a...thorough clean - every surface seemed sticky and not clean. The toilets were riddled with damp and unpleasant to use. The service was poor; these days you expect staff to smile and engage with guests. The food I felt was expensive for what it was and the lack of quality. It was such a shame as this is such an iconic venue; we won’t be returning.More

Booked a table for 90 minutes before a show at the concert hall opposite. This used to be the go to venue for lunch before an afternoon concert. Arrived on time, and was seated promptly. The waitress told us she would be back to take...our drinks order, she didn’t come back. The guy who eventually took the drinks said he would be back to take the food order, he didn’t come back. We eventually got our food order taken about 40 minutes after we’d been seated. 60 minutes in we where told the food would be about 15 minutes. At this point we paid for our drinks and left. We were lied to on at least 4 different occasions by 3 different members of staff. While I was waiting to pay for our drinks another customer was bitterly complaining about his long wait time. I will never go there again. What should have been a nice relaxing meal before the concert turned into a stressful dash to find some “fast food” so we could have at least something before the concert. It’s such a shame that such a great Pub has staff who simply do not care, and will say anything to get away.More

I had the salmon on sourdough bread starter. It was cold but somehow half of the small slice of salmon was dark red. It looked incredibly dried out and was hard. The description mentioned picked pink onions. If you squinted you may have seen a...tiny sliver. Main course was the buttermilk chicken burger. KFC do it 100% better and certainly don't charge £16.50. There was a tiny sliver of avocado, hardly worth the mention of it on the menu. They also managed to have half of the chicken cold and the other half hot? Hubby had the Nicholson burger. The meat resembled a Dalepak grill steak? Both main courses came with a small amount of fries. It tasted reheated not as though it was freshly cooked. I'm convinced they're buying in pre-prepared meals and heating them up. They have no problem whatsoever overcharging for the food! They also have no problem adding on a 10% service charge which we didn't notice until we got home. You'll wait an absolute age for your food. We'd finished our water before the food arrived and yet neither of the waitresses deemed it necessary to remove the glasses and bottles. They remained on the table the entirety of the meal. We had to ask for cutlery and condiments! It was incredibly noisy and we were sat upstairs. Please don't be fooled by the description of the food on the menu! It's very much the cheapest pub grub.More
