We are local Galwegians who would love to eat in McDonagh's. We've gone there twice in the past few years and each time they just bark something unintelligible at us as we enter. I assume it's because the more formal restaurant area is not open at the time and they are trying to tell us we need to queue for... more

I know that McDonaghs has good reviews, but I thought it was overated in terms of the fish and chips and cost. I suppose if you live in an area where you cannot get fish and chips with fresh seafood, that McDonaghs would be appealing. Living in New England, I have been to numerous places where we had better fish... more

We ate at McDonaghs as had read so much on the internet saying it was the best seafood restaurant in Galway, and have to say, were a little disappointed. We now notice that most of the “5 star” ratings were given by people in the US, who probably don’t have access to good local chippy. We had chatted with some... more

We went to McDonaghs Seafood House for dinner at the suggestion of the owners of our B & B. It tends to get crowded but is well worth the wait. We timed it well and were seated in 5 minutes. We chose the half of the restaurant with waitstaff. (You can also order on the other side and sit at... more

We did the take-away menu and sat in the front. Prices were good. Only had the chips for lunch and they were OK. Partner had chicken and chips and I thought the chicken was good. more

Five of my friends were over for the Galway Oyster festival. We had a good time but think its better in the claddagh rather than a hotel. Its just not the same. Had fish & chips and oysters in Mc Donaghs on friday there was a great buzz in the place and I found the staff friendly. more

There is nothing special about this place, other than it's very busy with tourists and it's supposed to have great fish and chips. We found the fish and chips ok, the staff some of the least friendly we encountered in Ireland and the ambiance more like a New England Long John Silver's than a restaurant. Skip this. more

Four of us ate in the downstairs fish & chip section on Tuesday August 24,2009. The restaurant was highly recommended by our guide book, the hotel staff and tripadvisor so we were all really looking forward to enjoying some great fish & chips. Boy, were we ever disappointed. Expecting a rare treat, I ordered plaice & chips with mushy peas... more

Can not for the life of me understand how people rave about this place. If you like you chips dossed in fat and you fish covered in mutt then this is the place for you. Certainly better when drunk but then again again what isn't more
