A very traditional restaurant with a French Bistro feel. The menu choice is excellent and is matched with by food quality. A little more expensive than the average quality restaurant, but certainly worth a visit.

Lovely traditional Portuguese Restaurant. It’s always busy. Lovely atmosphere. The staff are helpful & friendly. The steaks are beautifully cooked & presented. The portions are large. There is a dining area , under a veranda, there is also a large dining room upstairs that up...is used in the winter months. Booking is advisable.More
This turned out to be our favourite restaurant so we ate there twice. You do have to book the evening meal but you can just turn up for lunch. We had 2 wonderful meals there. The staff were friendly and helpful. If we had more...time would have gone back again.More
My 4th visit (In 2 years, 2 visits to Madeira) and it did not disappoint. Attentive staff and excellent food. The flambé bananas alone are worth a visit.
Booked back at the beginning of January for our anniversary meal and glad we did. Nothing to fault. Food, wine, service excellent as it was llast time we were here back in 2022.
Had dinner here with friends. Staff are welcoming and efficient. However the food was disappointing. It’s not a cheap meal but felt more like canteen food. Not hot and without flavour. Wine was good but top price for Madeira. Puddings were good. However I wouldn’t...recommend.More
This has to have been the worse and expensive meal in Funchal. We had carpaccio espadarte it came thin as paper and absolutely tasteless. Nothing on it 14.50 starter I had the soup tomato and onion barley warm and tastless 7.50 mains Espada Flambé was...dry with half cooked with three corgettes dreadful 19. I had a fish soup / stew which was 21 and a dish of fish pieces some dry and that had a few potatoes in it cut into tiny pieces ,it seemed old fish and the soup bit was tasteless and not nice. I was ill during the early hours with a stomach upset.More
We ate here three times. Excellent food and staff. They catered for ten of us. All meals were good hot and enjoyable. Top price but excellent.
To be honest the food was really quite basic. We both had the scabbard fish which was tasty but with boiled potatoes and green beans it was like something you get in a nice canteen. That said, the service was excellent and super friendly, the...green wine was superb and the crème brûlée was one of the best we’ve EVER had. For 100€ for two though they need to get the mains dishes up to parMore
This was the most delicious food we've had in a long time. Everything was perfect and the service was friendly and impeccable. I cannot recommend Casa Velha highly enough - we even had pudding (we never have pudding!) but thought "if they can make a...starter and main THAT delicious, what can they do with dessert?". The mango dessert was positively inspired - truly delicious food, Michelin-style. A real wow.More
Fantastic service and lovely food. I had scabbard and my friend had spaghetti with vegetables followed by creme brulee
We booked the New Year Eve gala Dinner, menu looked nice. Paid 50% deposit. Biggest mistake we made, the food was so underwhelming it was untrue. The lobster 2nd course was so over cooked it was a struggle to eat. The rest of the courses...were very poorly presented with no garnishes, just the food on a plate. The oranges sauce on the crepes was like diluted orange curd! The service was unbelievably slow as well. We just wanted to finish and get out. The final icing on the cake was the cracked coffee cup. There's not a lot else to say really. In all honesty, we should have complained and left, but as usual, didn't want to make a scene in a full resturant and had paid a deposite.Felt like we had been completely ripped off. A lot of money for cafe food. Not recommended and certainly won't be going back.More
We have done a lot of internet research to find good restaurants in Funchal and this place was on our list. The meal we had was absolutely perfect with not a single complaint about anything at all. I enjoyed every single bite and so did...my husband. What I have read in other reviews about the specialties at Casa Velha was true as I ordered one of their specialties and it was divine. The staff members were very competent and attentive. Everybody we spoke to communicated I very good level of English. Highly recommended fine dining experience. Would definitely return to this lovely restaurant next time we are in Madeira. Thank you for giving us such a lovely experience.More
My wife and I came to Cass Velha for Christmas dinner. The restaurant was busy but extremely well run. The staff were friendly, enthusiastic and helpful and we got our food and drinks quickly which was all the more impressive given how busy they were...that night. The food was unfortunately just "nice". It is a kind of 1970s / 1980s view of what was then contemporary cuisine with a few traditional Madeiran dishes. We had a beef carpaccio which was very good, a red snapper which was unfortunately very dry and served with bland vegetables, and a vegetable risotto which was tasty. We also had a crepe Alaska and a mango gratin for dessert. The mango gratin seemed to lack a strong mango flavour or the natural sweetness of mango making it taste slightly savoury. Perhaps the food would be tastier on a less busy night but I would say on the whole that the food was average.More
So disappointing- we went for dinner with great expectations but from beginning to end felt rushed in to ordering, the food came very quickly and it was all too fast. As it was a special occasion we ordered the chateaubriand cooked medium rare for 2.... When it arrived it had been already sliced, instead of being presented with the whole piece before it was sliced which is more traditional. The meat was barely cooked and was still blue on the inside and certainly not medium rare and had been dumped on some lukewarm green beans and a few little pieces of chopped carrot along with some very unappetising roasted potatoes. They agreed the meat was very undercooked and took it away and put the slices in a pan to brown- however of course by that time it looked very unappealing as it had lost the pinkness and served with the same vegetables which were even colder than before. No apology at all. We did not order a pudding and will not be returning.More
