Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I went to the Duke expecting to find the nice gastropub I used before Covid. Now the old dining rooms are a separate cocktail bar and the pub part is a rather desolate looking bar. A sign says food is coming again, but at present...this is just bar, and frankly in an area well served for pubs the only reason for going here is how very very quiet it isMore

We enjoyed our food and as we were eating before going to the Richmond Theatre nearby, we were glad that the service was prompt. However, it was a cold evening and we felt cold: the heating system seemed very inadequate. Worse still, the toilets were...dilapidated and not very clean. The flush button in the cubicle I used was obscured by spare toilet rolls, which is perhaps why the previous user had not flushed it. There was no soap. I asked the waiter to provide some soap, but an hour later it had still not been made available and by then, there was a queue for what seemed to be the only toilet. Despite the tasty food none of us in our party would be keen to return to the Duke (particularly on a winter's evening!)More

Arrived here at 6pm for a pre-theatre meal. The show was due to start at 7:30 and the theatre is a 5 minute walk away, so thought this would be no problem. After waiting nearly an hour and being told that they were trying their...best to serve everyone, we decided to cancel the meal and my money was refunded. At 7:15, as we were leaving for the theatre, the meals arrived. I told them we had already cancelled and received our money back !! We were now very hungry and had to make do with crisps and chocolates bought in the foyer. If only they had told us that delays were likely, at least we could have gone somewhere else.More

I don't call having one option as being vegan-friendly! During the booking process, we were assured there were vegan options. There was one, but it wasn't very good. As another reviewer said, this is more a pub than a restaurant and it's a very average...pub at that. The staff try hard but they can't compensate for a poor menu. We won't be returning.More

Haven’t been to The Duke for some time but was meeting friends for dinner and decided to go as having eaten here before I knew we would be well catered for. And we were! Two couples so 2 different sharing plates to start, the mezze...and the charcuterie boards. My only criticism of the charcuterie one was it literally had 2 pieces of each meat selection so it was only 1 each, seemed a bit stingy. But that was followed by 2 steaks, 1 fish and chips and 1 sausage and mash, all of which were very tasty, hot and filling. However, I was disappointed to see that the restaurant area is also now being used as the pub area so as we were still eating our food, groups of people were coming in and sitting at tables previously occupied by earlier diners. The restaurant is quite echoey due to the design but as more non diners arrived it got louder and louder and made conversation amongst us difficult. I’m sure this is a new facility as tables used to be left empty and were even laid up for the next days service. The staff were fairly nondescript, not particularly engaging but not rude, more uninterested. A shame as this used to be a nice place to have a pre dinner G&T on one side before walking to your table for dinner on the other. Doubt we’ll return anytime soon.More

We had booked a table for 2 at 6pm for a pre-theatre meal but one person became unavoidably delayed. The staff were so helpful in accommodating us as we phoned missing person for their order and had the small plates of food ready so that...we could eat as soon as both there. The Duke was at the time coping amazingly well without gas while an area gas main was being repaired. A temporary menu sheet had been printed and we chose various small plates of food due to time now short before theatre. I thought these were imaginative and particularly liked the Chicken liver & brandy parfait with apricot chutney and toasted sourdough, also the Cured Scottish salmon with lime, coriander and crushed avocado. I felt all staff involved were particularly helpful and patient in making our shortened visit very enjoyable.More

I wouldn't know what the food was like as the manager phoned me at 9.15am to say that they would be closing the pub at 8pm that evening. My reservation was for 7.30pm!! I had the option to bring my booking forward but we would...still need to vacate the pub by 8pm thereby completely ruining the evening. The excuse they gave was some sort of gas inspection. On Xmas Eve really???? We were really looking forward to a chilled evening celebrating Xmas Eve as a family. Obviously everywhere else in Richmond is booked as it is so last minute so no relaxing xmas eve for us thanks to the Duke. Appalled and angry.More

I have visited for years. Although NOT a traditional pub, the food here is awesome. Hot and freshly prepared very time you go. Had the "turkey" dinner and the "french beef" dinners while I was there and both awesome. Hot, lovingly prepared and served, and...delicious to the last bite. I almost want to lick the plate. The food is something to rave about. A bit pricier then most pubs, but well worth it. Larger servings, all the trimmings and worth the cost. A def place to visit. Very pleased with the food. Service is average but nice enough. A recommendation for a good meal.More

I visited The Duke with friends for drinks and dinner, and ordered the Cumberland sausages with mash and gravy thinking it would be an option that would be hard to get wrong. The “gravy” ended up being a puddle of flavourless brown water surrounding the...sausages and mash, and didn’t really meet the definition of gravy. When I asked the kitchen whether they could thickened up the gravy they reacted defensively saying that was just how they made it and they refused to change the dish. I have been to The Duke many times before and this was a very poor experience that has put me off ever returning.More

Had dinner in this place during a weekday and was really disappointed with the food, the setting and even to some extent the service. Food was unappealing and poorly cooked, menus looked dirty and still the bill was on par with some much better places...in Richmond. Avoid, except if you are desperate for a bite after a few too many beers. The pub area seemed more inviting and livelyMore

Went here with my family, what an awful place. Surly bar people and ripped the menus from our hands. Bad atmosphere.

With only only a few days to go we managed to find a table at The Duke did Mother’s day. Having read the reviews, I wasn’t expecting much but really thankful that they managed to squeeze a party of four in. On arrival we received...a very warm welcome and, the great service continued. It was a super friendly atmosphere. 3 of us had a roast, which was delicious for a pub lunch (with lashings of gravy!). My mum who’s a pescatarian had a fish dish - the staff were flexible and accommodating and altered the dish to swap out the butter beans with pancetta. The portions were huge! We wasted quite a lot of chicken (it was very tender!). We also had desserts - again very generous and scrumptious. Hadn’t had sticky toffee pud in the while and scoffed it down (it was so light!) So all in all it was a good afternoon, with great service and reasonable food. I’d definitely go there again.More
