I cannot say how dreadfully disappointed with The Dove i am. I called about 5 months ago and booked a table for 8 for lunch. I explained that we were meeting friends over from Australia and The Dove was approx half way gor those coming...from Devon, from Surrey and from Berkshire. The landlady said she would make a note that we would be arriving about 11am for a cuppa and a catch up before seating us for lunch at one. I asked if she wanted a deposit and was told no. She took my name and number and made the booking. About a fortnight ago i rang to make sure all was still ok but got no answer..... i must have made 30+ phone calls and left voice messages, messages on their social media, on their website. I did NOT get one call back!!! I can only assume she gave my table away and didnt have the guts to tell me, calling the landlady a gutless b**** is not even close to what i want to call her. What a crap way to run a business! The stress of trying to find somewhere else was unbelievable.Luckily i found The Royal Oak who did seat us with amazing service and food.More

A quite severe grading due to a series of disappointments that started the moment we arrived at The Dove after a stressful and very long drive from The Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. We arrived mid to late afternoon on a Friday and were greeted by...Lee; very helpful and cheery. All looking great so far, but things started going downhill from that point. He showed us to our accommodation, which was a nice sized room with king sized bed, two conservatory/ garden chairs, chest of drawers, built in cupboard and a tv. Not in the main building. It was one of six or seven rooms in a converted outbuilding and the furthest from the main building down a slippy paved pathway with no security/safety lighting. This gave the impression that the place was busy, which is why we had been allocated this particular room. This turned out not to be the case, but in fact we appeared to be the only guests. After unloading the car we asked to book a table for the restaurant that evening but were told that the kitchen was closed for refurbishment so, no hot food available at all. This included breakfast, continental option only. Oh! dear. We got settled and decided to watch a bit of television before heading off to find somewhere to eat but couldn't operate the tv remote. An overcomplicated Sky system that Lee had to come and show us how to operate. We returned about 8.45 pm only to find the bar closed. A quiet night it was to be then. I made a nightime hot drink and found old water in the kettle, and a carton of UHT milk had obviously broken in the container quite some time ago as the stench of bad milk / cheese was overpowering. I went over to breakfast the following morning and returned the offensive milk container and also to see what was on offer and it was truly disappointing, I just opted for coffee. Another disappointment as all that was served was cheap instant coffee. Not to be expected in this day and age I'm afraid. The rest is money saving ideas taken too far, single ply loo roll, cheap renovations/ upgrading and no or very overworked cleaning staff. Sorry to the staff at The Dove but you have been given a very poor deal as you are the ones who have to try to sell a very damaged product.More

Had booked a two night stay in the two bedroomed suite to explore Longleat, Stonehenge & the general area. The booking process was tortuous to say the least ... the manager siting IT problems. I eventually booked directly with him over the phone & had...to make contact again to ask for email confirmation of the transaction. None came. I emailed & asked for written confirmation & it arrived but was incorrect. There was no mention of the amount I had already paid to secure the booking. I asked for an amendment but again heard nothing. Alarm bells should have been ringing by this stage I know! On arrival we were met by a very pleasant member of staff who informed us that there would be no hot food available for dinner or breakfast & the place was on the verge of closing down. I felt like leaving immediately but it was getting late & we were all tired. The two bed suite was clean but the furniture was broken & sofa cushions grubby. I should imagine if it was maintained properly it would have been lovely. The Manager that took our booking was absent, leaving two lovely ladies to deal with the disgruntled guests. In the end we only stayed for one night as what was advertised was not on offer. We felt angry that the manager Lee had not contacted us to explain the situation as we would have cancelled our booking. If you are booked in here you need to find other accommodation. Dreadful, non existent customer service from Management.More

We popped in when passing through after reading good reviews. There was not enough staff on to manage and while the food we had was nice, there were several errors with our meals. Unfortunately we had to leave quickly as we were due to meet...family and so didn't notice that we had been overcharged until we later that night. Management were very slow to follow up when I contacted them and overall I was disappointed with our experience. I will not be visiting again.More

This pub is under new management so we thought we’d give it a try having not been there in a while, well I wish we didn’t bother. On arrival we noticed that two of the ales weren’t on, limiting our choices to one, and after...we were showed to our table we were told that half of the things on the menu weren’t available. We skipped the starters, two of us ordered fish cakes, one chicken and bacon dish and one Goan fish curry. The fish cakes although small were acceptable, the curry was nothing to write home about, basically prawns and rice, very dry. The chicken dish was very disappointing, large chunks of chicken, under cooked strips of bacon in a grey sauce. It was advertised with sautéed potatoes which weren’t there, when we told the waitress they were missing we were told they would be out shortly, they never arrived! This is a lovely pub in a lovely village however it is very expensive and not worth the money. The only good thing about the evening was the white wine and the beer. The chicken dish was knocked off the bill which was good of them, however we will not be returning.More

Very accommodating for our impromptu family gathering for 16 (coming in from US, Brighton and Rome). The conservatory was very lovely and the food was delicious. The portions were so generous, and we were grateful for the kindness, flexibility and joviality of Chef Jim!!

The staff here are all fantastic, nothing is a problem, and they go out of their way to accommodate your needs, even offering to loan me things from their own home to make my stay more comfortable. When we stayed, the weather was extremely hot and...humid. Unfortunately there are no fans available in rooms but the staff offered to lend me one from home....which was a godsend.More

I stayed here last night and ate in the restaurant. I last visited 4 years ago, it was great and busy so I was surprised last night the place was empty but now I know why. The staff are lovely however they are seriously let...down by the over priced poor quality menu. My food was cold and had to be returned to the kitchen which was surprising as only one other table in. It tasted average at best. The breakfast was even worst!! No menu to look at, just told it’s full English… oh but no sausage or egg and salmon. I order a bacon sandwich which was the worst I’ve ever eaten. Bacon was watery and pale as if boiled. Certainly not fried or grilled. Be warned if staying the bar will close early. After a 4 hr drive to get there I needed to do some work. The bar all closed up at 9.30 and doors locked. Rooms are ok, clean. But they have the smallest TV I’ve ever seen in a hotel room and no plug socket next to the mirror. Impossible to use hair styling appliances whilst at the mirror. The outside area needs a clean, I sat at a table outside to start, the floor was full of cigarette ends. With 2 bar staff and no customers someone could have done a sweepMore

Whilst walking in the area, we decided to eat at the Dove, having eaten there before...had a good reputation. It was Saturday lunch time. Surprisingly it wasn't very busy, only a few people. Now I understand why. I ordered the club sandwich. For £15 it...was expensive at best. Thinly sliced white bread, one piece of bacon, and a few little slices of chicken and a little salad. Shockingly bed, not even presented well. A real rip off, do my advice would be stay clear, unless they change their chef!More

Dreadful. It appears that there has been yet another change of chef and staff. At half the price it would still have been very poor value for money. If a pub has only six (which reduced down very quickly) things on the menu they should...be able to get them right, the online menu is not available don't be fooled by it. High prices for small portions of poorly prepared food, if they are not using the cheapest available ingredients then the chef is doing his best to make them taste that way. Looking around at all the food left on other tables we were not the only ones to feel the food was poor. Not suitable for anyone at all hard of hearing as it is like sitting in a glazed echo chamber so you can't spend the waits for service talking.More

I thought hard about leaving a review for the Dove . I have only left positive reviews before ,for outstanding food and service. I’ve always believed it’s not fair to write a negative review as they might just be having a bad day and you...inadvertently cause harm to their business . However on this occasion I feel strongly that I work hard to earn my £££ and I don’t want others who feel completely ripped off as I did. Firstly I can only say good things about the service I received and the waiting staff were excellent in what must be a difficult situation. We had checked the menu on the website and it looked good . However on arrival we were presented with a small blackboard that I initially I assumed was the specials . However on checking this was the menu . It contained 6 items , very simple fare , burger , steak ,fish and chips etc . We were told the curry was off. This would not of been a problem in its self if the food had been good. I chose the sirloin steak at £22. When it arrived it was a fairly small piece of steak accompanied by a very meagre portion of string fries, a field mushroom and a single cherry tomato. Along with a ramekin of what had been promised as pepper corn sauce but appeared to be brown sludge with an equal amount of oil floating on top. I was soon to discover my peppercorn sauce contained not one peppercorn and was in fact just split brown sludge and oil , mostly oil. My steak was stone cold and could only be cut with a repeated sawing action . No steak knives and doubt they’d of made a difference . When steaks from Aldi are excellent never mind some of the superb local butchers I can not fathom where these were obtained The field mushroom was also cold and once cut into just seemed be grease. It was possibly the worse meal out I have had in 20 years . I won’t dwell on the rest of my fellow dinners meals needles to say they were as bad as if not worse. I can not comprehend how in this day age this standard of food can be considered acceptable by proprietors of a pub. Particularly when we hear how much pubs are struggling. If the meal was £8 I’d of been shocked at at excess of £20 it was just robbery. The only reason we didn’t complain was we felt so sorry for the staff who were in an impossible situation With so many fantastic pubs in Wiltshire I will be giving the Dove a wide berth from now on.More
