I have been eating at WJ's about once a week for the past several months and have enjoyed each time I've been there. The food has always been good, especially the veal oscar. For those who want something a bit lighter the bar menu offers a great selection at reasonable prices (the chicken sandwich is my favorite). I've always found... more

WJ's was the best meal we've had in the entire Abingdon/Bristol area. We are tough critics, having lived in major cities for the past 20 years. The seafood is flown in fresh every day, and it was cooked very well - complimented, not overpowered the fresh nature of the fish. Wine list could use a liitle work, but we'll go... more

My boss and I were recently in the area for a quick business trip. We stopped in for lunch and enjoyed quiche, salad, and fruit. The perfect fluffy quiche was included goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes in a light and fluffy pastry type shell. The spinach salad featured candied pecans and a pomegranate/blueberry vinairgarette. Our waiter and friendly and just... more

This is a beautiful restaurant with very average food and very big prices. Our favorite thing was a dessert which cost $10 (you can imagine how much entrees are!). All the entrees we saw (and we ordered three different ones) are served on a bed of citrus-flavored rice. While it was good, it is an effort to disguise the small... more

the softshell crabs, the crabcakes, and the grouper, topped with lump backfin crab and shrimp were outstanding and done properly. The restaurant was so cold and noisy we had to move outside to be comfortable. We will go back this summer to eat again, but we will not sit inside with all that noise. more

The staff couldn't have been more accommodating, really trying to work us in for a table on a Saturday evening during the Virginia Highlands Festival. Heeding the comments about the drab house salad, we ordered the soup instead (an even trade) and enjoyed a delicious vegetable and Northern bean soup. We couldn't resist the grouper and weren't disappointed, a large... more

Your dining options might be a little limited in Abingdon and Willa Jacks is definitely worth visiting for a nicer night out. The entree selection is pretty standard but all was well done. The wine list had some pretty decent wines at reasonable prices as well. The service was quite good and everyone was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was... more

We were a bit nervous after reading some critical comments here, but we were delighted, overall!! The scallops were gigantic and perfectly cooked; the blackend salmon on a bed of spinach was delicately seasoned; the grouper is worth a return trip. The desserts were outstanding. We had the sampler and know what we'll order next time. The servings were large... more

Our hotel had a picture of The Tavern on the wall so we headed there for lunch, but it was closed. We strolled down a bit further and stumbled upon Willa Jack's. What a great find! The kids had grilled cheese on some good bread and little bowls of fresh fruit, all for a very modest price. I had the... more

We took another couple the day after we had "dined" at the Troutdale in Bristol, Virginia, and the differences were striking. The Troutdale service is overly attentive and stuffy ("How is your lettuce salad?" "It's lettuce, OK?" "Can I partially refill that water glass for the eighth time?"), and the Victorian house atmosphere is quaint but a bit smothering. The... more
