Disappointed that I didn’t even get the common courtesy of a response to my two emails to book for the locals evening! Checked my junk emails too. I went for a drink and found it very stark.

Brilliant Local Pub/ Restaurant. A lovely new look to our local restaurant and great service. A refreshing menu with a variety of specials to tempt the palette. Friendly service and always a warm welcome when you arrive.
Visited The Exchequer for Mother’s Day lunch. They managed to squeeze us in after a late request for a table, so was very grateful. Service was great throughout and food was amazing. We had lamb, pork and chicken roast dinners between us, plus chicken burger...for my son. The onto the lovely pudding options. Can’t thank the staff enough and my mum loved her lunch. We both said we’d visit again separately, so wanted to say a big thank you and make a recommendation for others to go and try it as well.More
Having arrived at 5.30 pm two of our party of 7 ordered monkfish which was off the menu. We ordered our starters, and only as they arrived they informed us that they had no scallops😱. Sadly being same person who wanted the monkfish, this was...very poor. Portions very small. Nobody came and asked if we’d like more drinks. Ladies toilets one was blocked and flush broken, second toilet very difficult to get inside, and low on toilet paper. We will not return. We used to really love this restaurant, had it been busy we could understand, but very quiet at the time of our sitting. As a Mother’s Day celebration it was really poor. Finally when our bill arrived, we had been charged for the scallops that they did not have. 🤷♀️More
First time here and will be back. Nice ambience, not heaving like some pubs offering Sunday roast. Varied menu. Tasty food and no problem getting more gravy! Friendly staff. Recommended.
Been for Afternoon Tea today and was really pleased. Having been to lots of afternoon teas in various places this was one of the nicest. Sandwiches were very tasty and lots of them, the cakes were delicious and the scones were warm and came with...plenty of cream. The staff were absolutely lovely and the pub itself was very welcoming. Will be back for a dinner next time!More
Booked an afternoon tea for six to celebrate my birthday. The cakes and scones were very nice but the doorstep sandwiches with crusts on, cut in two and piled high on several plates were very disappointing and not at all like the photo on the...website. Not sure what went wrong but won't be booking another tea.More
We celebrated my daughter’s ’Baby shower’ here today with afternoon tea for 4 adults and the 3 children ate from the children’s menu. The whole experience was fantastic, The afternoon tea was really delicious: plenty of very tasty finger sandwiches; freshly baked scones, jam and...clotted cream and beautifully crafted miniature cakes. The tea and coffee supplies were indeed ‘bottomless’ and the children’s meals were generous, well priced and enjoyed. The staff were attentive and very helpful We have eaten many afternoon teas, as a family , and I must say that this one certainly rates amongst the best. The food was excellent and extremely good value. Thank you - we will definitely be back.More
We were a party of 9 and arrived at 7 o’clock for our annual Christmas celebration The tables were wobbly, there was a spring sticking out of the base of one of the chairs and we had to ask for the christmas tree lights to...be put on. Not a good start! On paper the menu looked good and price was in line with other local pubs. However… The main courses came with very little (if any) vegetables which came at a supplement of £4.50. The scallops starter was a £4 supplement and you were given 2. The cheese plate advertised for desert had only one type of cheese. The pub says that it caters for gluten free diets, so why were there no gluten free mince pies? The beef bourguignon was a surprise. I was expecting some sort of rich casserole. Instead I received quite a thick slice of fatty beef with a small amount of gravy. All of us who had this dish complained. The choux bun desert was equally disappointing. On the positive side, the staff were excellent and did their best to make good. We were compensated with a free bottle of wine, a couple of free deserts and my beef was exchanged. However I still feel that I left the pub wishing I had gone elsewhere for this Christmas meal. It was overpriced for what it was and that special evening with friends was marred. Next year I will look elsewhere.More
Nine of us went for our Christmas meal last night and we ate from the Festive Menu. It wasn't the best meal we have had together. Staff serving were very, very good. The beer was also good - and apparently, so was the wine (...I didn't drink any). But the food wasn't 100%. The menu is limited as it's 'festive', so there were about 5 or 6 items each for starter, mains and dessert. There was a 'fixed' price for two or three courses. We all had a starter and main and a few of us had dessert. There were no complaints about the starters. I had the scallops, which had a surcharge of £4 on top of the fixed price and had a bet with a couple of our crowd how many I would get. I reckoned 2, but the consensus was 3. When the dish came, I 'won'... I had two not particularly large scallops in a sauce with something green. It was a very tasty dish and I know scallops are expensive but it did seem a bit mean to me plonking an extra £4 on top of the standard starter price just for 2 scallops. But never mind, it tasted nice and certainly hadn't blunted my appetite! I then had the monkfish thermidore which I thoroughly enjoyed, although I just got four slices of sauteed potato at the side. Luckily my wife doesn't like potatoes much so gave me some of hers as I otherwise wouldn't have had enough food (and I don't eat much). Four of our party had the 8 hour slow braised beef bourguignon and three the turkey dish. No one had enough gravy for their turkey, but the staff quickly supplied some more and that was generally reviewed as OK. But everyone had problems with their beef - it was too fatty and tough and had very few veggies. One of our group asked for another dish instead - which the staff were happy to do. But there was a fair bit of grumbling about the beef around the table. And finally the people who had dessert, all had the choux bun with ice cream. That was considered as 'OK'. So not a brilliant meal. It was pretty expensive - but everything is when eating out nowadays - and there was obviously something not right with the beef dish - which isn't exactly complicated to make. In fairness, we got the price of a bottle of wine taken off our bill, plus a change of main course without any additional cost and as I said earlier, the serving staff did a great job - and the pub itself is very nice with a good atmosphere.More
It is a once-a-month (at least) treat for us. We have never been disappointed with the welcome, the service, the food and drink. Wish all gastro pubs were as good as this.
Although the food is very good at this pub the venue is terrible for disabled people and powerchair users such as myself. You are unable to get into the pub yourself due to two steps going up into the pub. Someone with you either needs...to go in and ask for a ramp or if you were on your own you would need to phone inside and ask for someone to help. The ramp is kept outside so when visiting in the rain the ramp was slippery, the ramp is made from plastic and would not be suitable for heavy powerchairs as it would probably bend or snap. The ramp is also not fit for purpose as it doesn't sit flush and feels precarious going up and down it. Someone needs to stand at the bottom of the ramp and hold the end down in order for it to be used. There are two further ramps that are required when inside the pub, one of which is the one from outside and again was still slippery from the rain. I did not feel safe coming in and out of this venue. To top off a bad accessibility trip there are no accessible toilets, and the toilet that is available does not have a wide enough door in order to get a wheelchair or powerchair through. If this hadn't have been a group meal that I had already paid for then I would have turned around and gone somewhere accessible. Although the staff were polite and apologetic that there was no dedicated facilities for disabled people they stated that as the building was old there is no requirement for them to do so. So in short, if you're non disabled and can get in and out and use the facilities great, if you are disabled then please avoid like the plague for your own safety.More
Really nice relaxed brunch on a Saturday lunchtime. We had the veggie breakfast and teas and coffees, both food and service was excellent.
Very disappointed in our Sunday lunch here yesterday. We were a group of 4 adults and 2 children. Once seated at our table we were left for over 15 minutes before anyone came to take our order. The food took over 45 minutes - one...of the kids meals arrived about 20 minutes before everyone else’s, no offer of any sauces or condiments. We had to keep getting up to find someone if we needed anything. Eventually our food arrived and it was just ok. £22 for the Sunday roast beef and I had two small pieces of meet on my plate… I’m not sure if they were short staffed or had problems in the kitchen but either way, communication with us would have been appreciated. The servers all seemed very young, so either they haven’t been trained properly or they’re very inexperienced. No one checked on us to see if we needed anymore drinks or if everything was ok - we noticed the same at the tables around us and that other people were getting up to ask for things. My friend went to the toilet at one point while we were still waiting for food and he noticed that about 4 of them were just standing and chatting behind the bar! The female toilets also had the most awful smell (one customer commented that it smelled as if a dead animal was in the toilets). So unfortunately we didn’t have a good experience and will not be returning.More
6 of us all had different roasts, including the vegetarian wellington, all excellent. Had a couple of extra sides of veg, the tender stem broccoli was amazing. Extra roast potatoes and yorkies were offered too! Nice touch. Deserts were superb also. Compliments to the “new”...chef? It was a very busy Sunday lunch but everything went smoothly, perfect waiting time for everything served. Wine was pricey, £16 for a glass of Malbec, and roasts a little expensive but certainly worth it. Our waitress was charming, ( sorry didn’t catch her name but long blond hair?) very attentive. Will definitely return.More
