December 29th went with family for a special meal. The waitress greeted us with " I will have to let you know what we have left on the specials board " She took our order and then came back saying " We have not got any pork, beef, chicken but we have got steak" We waited ages for the starters... more

We stayed for 1 night following a wine tasting meal. We found the staff very pleasant and the food a bit patchy. We had a 5 course meal for £28 including wine tasting which we thought was good value. However, the lobster was overcooked also the beef in red wine which seemed to have been slowly cooked and then reheated... more

We visited this pub in August whilst travelling to Edinburgh and was a good stopping point just off the A1. The pub itself was very busy as there was a special offer on at the time we arrived but the lady managing the bar was very welcoming and happy to help explaining the menu and taking our order. I had... more

we visited this restaurant after hearing good reports, i myself am a chef and famously very hard to please when eating out, so my partner was thrilled to have a recommendation for us to try. upon arrival we were reasonably happy with the ambience, and some good choices on the menu, i chose seared scallops with black pudding and pea... more

Despite warnings from family that the food has recently gone downhill at this pub, we decided to give it a go. Greeted by a mute and unsmiling waitress in the restaurant, things did not start well. They could not find our reservation, but it is difficult to know the explanation for this because of the mute waitress. Starters were acceptable,... more

My wife and I stayed mid-week and found the place to be excellent. The room we had was large with a very comfortable bed, it was clean and better than some we stayed in! The staff went out of their way to be friendly. The food was excellent, the ingredients are locally sourced and cooked to perfection, the presentation was... more

Having read reviews and seen that the Cook and Barker had won awards I booked for an anniversary dinner for myself and my husband. The restaurant was full which gave a nice atmosphere but the staff appeared to be struggling to cope. Our meal orders were taken quite quickly (alhtough some options had already run out at 8pm) however we... more

On a Monday night the Cook and Barker offers a 3 course (plus intermediary) meal including a bottle of wine, which costs just £38 for two people. The menu had plenty to choose from and the service was fine and friendly, the venue very pleasant and relaxed. The food was good, better than your average pub fare and at that... more

We had dinner twice while staying up in the area, a cute pub in Newton-on-the-Moor. Between 5-7pm you have a dinner special for £10 and it was WELL worth it, even if you came later and paid more. Rich dishes, lovely fish, huge selection, really delicate if a bit rich (which made it yummy!) No room for dessert. Even the... more
