We went on November 34 after seeing an article in People magazine. We were visiting from Michigan. The food was average. We have had much better seafood at Shem Creek. There was a dog walking through the dining area and a rat came in from a hole in the wall. That is not atmosphere, that is disgusting. more

When my husband and I ate here the place was busy. We ate in open sided building without screens We had oysters that were over cooked. We ordered fried shrimp that were delivered to our table cold. If this wasn't bad enough their were so many mousquitos they were crawling on our food! We were almost eaten alive! We will... more

Lot of folks are so shocked when they see it they run. Let them go back to the fine white table cloths, silverware, and candles of the city. I have a cooler full of cold beer and came here to eat some of the best seafood on the coast. more

Where to begin? I've been reading about this place since before the fire and have been meaning to try the "best seafood in Charleston" ever since. My wife and I finally made it and could not have been more disappointed. The oysters were small and dirty and the crab cakes and hushpuppies on the combo plate were inedible. The shrimp... more

We eat a lot of oysters in our travels...we will not be back. Crab cakes were reccommended by a local, absolutely the worst I have ever had (I'm southern raised..have eaten many). It was like a hard corn meal patty and I don't know who was holding the crab..it didn't make it into our crab cake. Nice people, a lovely... more

After seeing this restaurant on the Travel Channel it was one of our destinations while visiting Charleston. We were there on September 16, 2009, and we didn't know the oyster season was not starting till the next day. But we decided to stay and eat dinner about 5 pm. I had the seafood sampler platter and my wife had the... more

If you love oysters, this is it. Keep in mind if you want Oysters, season is from Sept til bout March. Don't let this stop you from going, the rest of the menu is fantastic. This is truly one of a kind, romantic, casual, fun, and view is amazing. Casual outdoor dining that's fun and low key. The food is... more

Friends recommended Jestine's and Carolina's but we found the lines there long and full of tourists. Following a recommendation from the Moon guidebook, we found our way out to Bowen's Island. It was exactly what we had been hoping for. Completely funky atmosphere at the end of a dirt road but the best shrimp, seafood and sunset views on the... more

Since the early 1960s, BI has been a legend to generations of Citadel cadets who loved/love it. We drove by on 6/15/09 to see the progress on rebuilding from a fire. Their local, fresh-harvested oysters are the best steamed oysters ever...delivered to your table by the coal-shovel-full! They are only available from about October through April (the "R" months). So... more

If you want a true coastal experience try Bowen's Island Restaurant. Don't go looking for a candle light and flowers atmosphere because you will not find it here. What you will find is the best shrimp on the East Coast at an old fish camp. The special recipe cole slaw and every item on the menu is wonderful too. Unfortunately,... more
