The food was FABULOUS, our waiter was great, and the prices were fair. I love everything about this place - but it was not high on atmosphere - very loud. Must haves are the fried catfish, collards, and pecan pie, though everyone at my table enjoyed their meal. more

While in Chattanooga this week I had lunch at the Southern Star. My benchmark for southern cooking is Mary Macs in Atlanta (and my mother's cooking). Southern Star is good but not quite as good as Mary Macs or my mother. The big disappointment was the banana pudding. I was told that Southern Star's banana pudding was the best around.... more
We separate the eggs, make the custard from yolks, whole milk, sugar, butter and a little cornstarch. Each pudding is topped with a handmade meringue. We've done it the same way, every day that we've been in business--since August of 2000.
My mom and I ate at Southern Star twice while we were in Chattanooga for the Great American Scrapbook Convention. I have now eaten here twice and have been delighted both times. I'm on a project at TVA and it is a nice short walk. I really enjoy that the blue plate is different each time, so are the sides.
