We often visit the reliably good Foxhound in Brixton but decided we'd visit here for a change. The restaurant was fully booked on a Friday evening so we ate in the bar, ordering from the bar menu. The selection on the printed menu was not all that huge and rather predictable, so we all opted for dishes from the specials... More

Second visit to Devon this year and of course we had to go back to the California Country Inn - first class meals for all 3 of us in the inn's lovely restaurant - I think it has a lovely atmosphere. We were made very welcome by Johnathan and felt like locals! The meals were all excellent and decent portions!... More

Whether we've dropped in for a bar meal for two, booked for a party of 35, or arranged a special celebration in the restaurant for 20 family members (as we did on Saturday), the California has always been accommodating, served top class food and given us a great evening. Despite ages ranging from 7 to late 70s and a variety... More

We thought 3rd time lucky, two other visits okay, but nothing to write home about, this last visit was terrible,we went for Sunday lunch at 1-30pm 14th August, man behind the bar was so unhelpful if he is the owner he should sell up and move on,how about a job as a traffic warden? Back to our meal as we were ordering they ran... More

Some good reports. Distinctly odd ambience and decor. Food expensive and not enticing. Didn't feel welcome. Rather patronising approach from management. Quite a trek to get out here from Plymouth. Not very hospitable. More

Booked a table in person, at the pub, earlier that day. On arrival at appointed time that evening, greeted with 'You'll have to wait; they're all arriving at once!' - this by a surley, elderly gentleman (landlord pere?) who didn't even ask us if we'd like a drink. Female bar staff more helpful - eventually found us a nice corner... More

The California Country Inn was absolutely fantastic - first class food and first class hosts - the manager, I believe he's called Johnathan, is absolutely in his element running the inn and what a fantastic job he does - he is the epitomy of customer service and organisation! He was great with us obviously likes to make sure his customers... More

I should start by saying that the food was very good. My steak was very well cooked and my fiance's pork dish was delicious. The waitresses and barmaids were smiley and polite too. However the manager and landlord were rude, arrogant and surly. So much so that it was almost comical. Almost. Other reviewers have mentioned the landlords one word... More
