Hen of the Wood is the most delicious experience I've had in a long time. Not only do the staff take excellent care of you, but the food is amazing. I've been to Hen of the Wood about 10 times in the last year and have never been disappointed! It's a culinary delight that everyone should experience. Also I'd like... more

Food was quite good and not overpriced for quality of ingredients and preparation. The room was really cozy and personally- I like the open kitchen and the glimpse into the careful attention focused on every prep. Frankly- I was even impressed with the superb training of the staff.. It seemed each waiter was willing and able to take dishes from... more

Warm ambience, great service and a delicious meal made for a wonderful anniversary celebration. The grist mill is a unique setting for a restaurant. The low lighting and comfortable seating is second to the quality of the ingredients and their preparation. I have never raved about a salad however I would have been happy with a double serving along with the... more

I don't personally like when the kitchen is open to the dinning area, because you end up smelling like you did the cooking. Our watress was aloof and not friendly. I think it was due to the fact that the only time they could accommodate us was after 9:00 p.m., so my party was not in the mood for a... more

Lovely setting. Attentive and unobstrusive service. 4 star but not 5 star food in general, in our opinion, despite NYT rave review. Main courses featured truly excellent quality and preparation of rabbit and lamb. But accompaniments were sparse (we are veggie lovers and I surely would have preferred more red cabbage and less rabbit). Vermont cheese selection is superb, in... more

We dined at Hen of the Wood in June 2008. Upon entering the restaurant we were surrounded with the warm glow of dimmed lights, candles in the stone walls and warmth of a well decorated room. Ambience is wonderful and they have done a great job converting the former mill. It was a bit chilly (Vermont in June can be... more

After reading a rave review in the NY Times, my girlfriend and I decided we must experience the Hen of the Wood. Unfortunately, the chef undercooked (severally) my appetizer and main dish (quail and venison respectively). The restaurant admitted that the quail was rare but claimed that the venison had to be cooked that way for taste reasons. Too bad it... more

We first dined at Hen of the Wood in July 2008. The superb meal combined with the warm atmosphere of the dining room made us long to return. So...in November, we found a great price for a flight from Atlanta to Burlington and made a reservation to dine once again at Hen of the Wood. Listen -- if you are... more

I'm not sure what all the excitement is about. While visiting friends of ours in Hyde Park, four of us planned and looked forward to dinner here, after great raves from others. The atmosphere is ok. Love the natural stone wall with candles tucked in. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. The menu was a little bizzare. The cuts... more
